This Christmas might feel a bit empty for Ghosts fans, as it’s the first holiday season without a festive special from the BBC comedy. Last year’s Christmas special marked the series finale, with Alison and Mike selling Button House, but the couple promised to return each year after it was transformed into a hotel.
The ending seems to leave the door open for future one-off specials, and with recent revivals like Outnumbered and Gavin & Stacey, Ghosts fans are wondering if they could see more of Button House in the future. Speaking with RadioTimes.com at the Radio Times Screen Test Awards, co-creator and Robin actor Laurence Rickard teased the possibility: “We shut the door, but doors have hinges and frames and things. Doors make no difference to ghosts.”
“Ghosts go on forever,” Rickard added, hinting that future specials aren’t out of the question. Alison’s actress, Charlotte Ritchie, added her hope with a cheerful, “We hope so, I hope so,” while Kitty actress Lolly Adefope offered a hopeful, “Fingers crossed.”
And fans might not need to wait for a special to revisit Ghosts, as several books expand on the story and characters. Actor and co-creator Mathew Baynton recently discussed the potential for more books, though he and the creative team are focusing on other projects for now. When asked about other writers potentially taking on spin-offs, Baynton expressed some reluctance: “I think that would be harder than the story idea itself – actually relinquishing authorship.”
While Baynton hinted that Ghosts‘ creators are “too controlling” to hand over the reins, fans can rest assured that the doors at Button House remain open – or at least slightly ajar – for possible future hauntings.
