Ghosts fans ‘in denial’ as beloved character leaves CBS show but showrunners explain reason for ‘crushing’ exit

The Season Three premiere of Ghosts left fans angry.

The Season Two finale not only ended on a cliffhanger, but one of the beloved cast members had their last moments on the show.

Sam, played by Rose McIver, realized that one of the ghosts had been “sucked off,” which is the term the show uses for when one of its spirits ascends.

In the Season Three premiere, fans learned that Flower, played by Sheila Carrasco, was the poor soul.

Ghosts wasted no time in revealing that Flower had ascended.

Flower is the 1960s-inspired hippie, who was high on acid and tried to hug a bear and eventually died.

The showrunners said that Flower had a lot of growth towards the end of Season Two, so it made sense for her to get sucked off.

There would also be mixed reactions to her ascending.

Thor, played by Devan Chandler Long, was going to be “crushed” because he loved her the most.

“It just seemed like it created a lot of stories for us to mine,” they said.

FLOWER’S ABSENCE EXPLAINED
However, the showrunners, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, went deeper into their reasoning to Entertainment Weekly.

“We had a lot of different notions, but our plan was to talk it out and see which path we wanted to follow,” Port said.

“You gotta go down the path to see how fruitful it is and see what it leads to and what it does for the whole next season, so that’s what we did.”

Technically, Flower didn’t die, as she was already dead.

She just moved on from Purgatory.

Wiseman told Variety that they didn’t necessarily know which Ghost was getting sucked off after the Season Two finale.

But, ultimately, they chose Flower because they said her absence could “disrupt the order of things in the house.”

COULD SHE RETURN?
Fans might not have seen the last of Flower.

When Variety asked the showrunners if Flower could come back they played it coy.

“I think it takes some interesting turns,” Port said.

“In terms of seeing ghosts going forward or not, this is the kind of show where you could see a ghost anywhere. We’ve hinted that ghosts are in heaven. They’re in hell, they’re on Earth, so I think there’s different ways to see people too.”
