In its two seasons on air, CBS’ Ghosts has quickly become one of TV’s most beloved comedies. Adapted from a British series of the same name, the show follows couple Sam and Jay who move into an inherited mansion already inhabited by several colorful spirits throughout history. The problem is that only Sam can see and hear the ghosts.
Audiences have fallen in love with the show and its eclectic cast of characters, living and dead. It’s the second-highest-rated comedy on CBS, sometimes outscoring its number 1 lead-in, Young Sheldon. Its swift season three renewal was no surprise, and new episodes are set to return on Feb. 15.
This year, viewers have had to wait nearly six months longer for their returning shows thanks to the dual Hollywood strikes. Ghosts certainly left audiences with a lot to ponder over the extended hiatus. The second season finale teased a possible cast shake-up, with one or more of the ghosts potentially crossing over to the “other side.” So, could that happen? Let’s look at where the show left off, how it sets up next season, and what else we might see when Ghosts finally rises from its lengthy slumber.
Currently, we don’t know much about what to expect from season three. A tagline for the premiere episode tells us it will center on Sam and Jay attempting to figure out which ghost passed to the afterlife at the end of last season’s finale. Beyond that, it’s not revealed or hinted if any of our beloved spirits are exiting the cast. We’ll find out for sure in the premiere, along with Sam and Jay. A 30-second teaser doesn’t give any additional details either. We see Sam and Jay searching the house, only to find it empty.
Star Danielle Pinnock, who portrays Prohibition-era lounge singer, Alberta, offered some hints in an interview with Deadline. “This season, Alberta’s going to be in her shenanigans,” Pinnock noted. She also teased more from Rebecca Wisocky’s Hetty, suggesting neither of them is the character that exited. Though this season will feature only 10 episodes due to the strike, the audience should “prepare themselves” as these are “fierce” episodes, per Pinnock.
Sheila Carrasco, who plays perpetually stoned hippie Flower, was reportedly expecting a child around the time that season three was set to begin production. Could she have been the spirit who left? If Carrasco needed to take time off, that’s one way to do it. Cast members Asher Grodman (Trevor) and Roman Zaragoza (Sassapis) have shared behind-the-scenes shots and teases of the new season on their social media, hinting they will remain on the show. While these leaks allow us to piece some things together, it’s not enough to get a complete picture.
