The highly anticipated fourth season of CBS’s supernatural comedy Ghosts is set to premiere on Thursday at 8:30 PM EDT/PDT, and it’s bringing some exciting changes to the Woodstone Bed & Breakfast. For the first time, Utkarsh Ambudkar’s character, Jay, will finally be able to communicate with the colorful ghosts that inhabit their mansion.
Ambudkar expressed his excitement at Comic-Con, saying, “Yes! I wish I was strong enough to throw this table right now. I finally get to talk to people at work!” This new dynamic is sure to add a fresh layer of comedy and complexity to the series.
The show follows Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay, a couple who move to upstate New York to renovate the rundown mansion they’ve inherited. After Sam has a near-death experience, she gains the ability to interact with the ghosts who reside there.
In Season 4, the cast will expand to include new characters—both living and dead. Mary Holland joins as Patience, the ghost of a judgmental Puritan woman who has a complicated history with the Revolutionary War phantom, Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones). Following her dramatic appearance in the Season 3 finale, fans will get to see what Patience has in store for Isaac when the new season kicks off.
“She’s funny, quirky, and off—perfect for Patience,” executive producer Joe Port shared. Román Zaragoza, who plays Sasappis, expressed his admiration for Holland, noting he was “in awe of her.”
Another exciting addition is Dean Norris, known for his role in Breaking Bad, who will play Sam’s estranged father, Frank. The relationship between Sam and Frank is strained due to his absence during her childhood. His visit to Woodstone, accompanied by his new girlfriend, will force Sam to confront her feelings and have a long-overdue father-daughter conversation.
Port mentioned that Norris brings a “gruff, no-nonsense Dean Norris-type role” to the character, making him a fitting choice to explore the complexities of their relationship.
The upcoming season also promises a Halloween-themed episode, heavily featuring Patience. “A Puritan ghost will have a big effect on the house and might not be the biggest fan of Halloween,” Port teased. Additionally, fans can look forward to a one-hour Christmas special that introduces Jay’s large family, creating a potentially chaotic but festive environment at Woodstone.
Ambudkar humorously remarked, “I think it’ll be really stressful for Sam. It’s going to be a major chance for her to prove herself to Jay’s family and for them to accept their unconditional love for each other.”
The new season will also showcase Jay’s restaurant opening, leading Ambudkar to joke that Ghosts might transform into “that incredibly funny comedy known as ‘The Bear.’”
During the Comic-Con panel, the cast shared their favorite episodes, including an emotional moment from Season 3 involving Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), who reveals a dark secret about her past while helping fellow ghost Flower (Sheila Carrasco). Wisocky noted the importance of addressing sensitive topics, saying, “That feels really extraordinary to have that kind of communication with an audience, especially with an absurd half-hour comedy.”
As Hetty continues to evolve, Wisocky hinted at a gradual thawing of her character’s defenses, stating, “She’s going to step up and help her great-great-great-great-niece operate the B&B while Jay is busy with his restaurant. I predict I might be more in her way and more bossy about how she runs her business.”
With new characters, festive specials, and fresh challenges ahead, Season 4 of Ghosts is set to be an unforgettable ride for fans. Don’t miss the premiere this Thursday!
