The warm comedy Ghosts has become a CBS hit, overcoming occasional feelings of claustrophobia, partly due to its pandemic-era launch. In a recent interview with TheWrap, star Rose McIver, who plays Sam, discussed how the Season 4 premiere expands the show’s universe and introduces new characters.
Introducing Patience
One key development in the premiere is the introduction of a new ghost, Patience, played by Mary Holland (“Nightbitch”). McIver praised Holland’s portrayal of the traumatized Puritan ghost but admitted she initially felt apprehensive about potential overlaps with the existing character, Hetty. “I was a little concerned about how similar Patience and Hetty might be as rule-setters,” McIver explained. “But seeing them together highlighted how different they are and how progressive Hetty has become in her own humorous way.”
As the premiere concludes, it’s clear that Patience will be sticking around, potentially appearing beyond her initial arc. “Mary is awesome to have around, so I’m sure she’ll be back plenty,” McIver noted.
Holland, a seasoned performer from Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, brings depth to her character. “She can make Patience, who could easily come off as dull, feel energetic and thoughtful,” McIver said. “In true improv style, she’s very much in the moment.”
Expanding the Show’s Universe
In addition to Patience, next week’s episode will introduce Sam’s father, played by Dean Norris (“Breaking Bad”). McIver highlighted the significance of his long-awaited arrival: “We haven’t met him in three full seasons. There have been multiple Christmases without mention of him, so the stakes are high.”
This reunion offers a chance for Sam to reconnect with her father, allowing McIver to explore new emotional depths in her character. “He has a tough exterior but a sensitive heart, which is fascinating,” she said. “It gives insight into Sam’s longing for family and her fear of abandonment, paralleling Patience’s own experiences of being stranded for centuries.”
With Sam’s partner Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) also opening a new restaurant at their bed and breakfast, the show is set to welcome even more new characters. “Anything that opens up the universe is helpful,” McIver shared. “We often find ourselves in the same house with the same characters, so having this restaurant injects fresh blood into the mix.”
As Season 4 unfolds, Ghosts is poised to explore exciting new pathways and enrich its narrative landscape.
