Dirt bike-riding Cheryl Steele may already be a frontrunner on The Golden Bachelor, but this week she proves she’s got the sharpest wit, too. In Parade’s exclusive sneak peek, the 66-year-old contestant steps up to the mic during the group date roast and delivers the night’s biggest laugh — a perfectly timed joke at Mel Owens‘ expense that even leaves him blushing.
In the upcoming episode, Mel finds himself in the hot seat during a group date unlike any other. Twelve of the remaining women head to Los Angeles’ historic Bellwether Theater, where comedian Jared Freid co-hosts a no-holds-barred roast aimed squarely at the 72-year-old lead.
Freid sets the tone immediately with a sharp opener: “I’m Jared Freid, I’m very excited to be here. We’re gonna roast Mel! I’m 40, I’m the age Mel wishes you were.”
The women waste no time getting in on the fun. Terri Alani reminds the audience why the roast feels extra relevant: “Mel absolutely deserves to get roasted for the things he said about age on the podcast. Yeah, we’re gonna give him heck.”
From there, the jokes fly fast. Monica Brewer compares Mel to a vintage automobile: “Mel, you’re like a classic car — you don’t go over 60.” Frontrunner Cheryl proves why she’s an early favorite with her Detroit-inspired zinger: “You remind me of a Detroit-style pizza — cheesy and square.”
Even Freid seems impressed with how confidently the contestants handle the mic. “It’s so stressful to do stand-up, it’s so stressful to try a new joke,” he marvels as the way they’re all just going for it.
The roast is only one part of an action-packed episode that also features a Michelin-starred cooking date at Hollywood’s famed Petit Trois and a surprise slumber-party cameo from Kathy Swarts and Susan Noles of Season 1. But for now, fans can enjoy Parade’s sneak peek at the roast, where laughter proves to be the best way to break the ice.
The Golden Bachelor season 2 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
