We knew Golden Bachelor Mel Owens was good at sports, but it turns out he’s also a good sport.
The former NFL linebacker was the subject of a comedic roast during the Wednesday, Oct. 1, episode of “The Golden Bachelor.” On a group date, the women vying for Mel’s heart wrote their best burns and performed them in front of a live audience. Comedian Jared Fried was there to help the contestants with their material.
At the end of the roast, Mel named Nicolle Kate the winner. Her prize? A romantic one-on-one dinner with him.
Many of the roast jokes took aim at the comments Mel made during a June appearance on the “MGoBlue Podcasts With Jon Jansen.” He spoke about wanting to “stay away from artificial hips and wigs” and eliminate women that are “60 and over,” despite being 66 himself.
Nearly all the women on Mel’s season of “The Golden Bachelor” are 60+, so an apology was in order when they all arrived at the Bachelor mansion.
“I hope you forgive me and let me earn it back,” Mel told the ladies. “Age is just really a number, and spirit has no age.”
Mel’s contrition didn’t stop the “Golden Bachelor” women from poking fun at his blunder. Keep scrolling to see the best jokes from Mel’s “Golden Bachelor” roast:
Monica Brewer
“Mel, you’re like a classic car. You’re strong, you’re sexy, and you don’t go over 60,” Monica opened her strong set.
The flight attendant went on to comment on Nicolle’s habit of making out with Mel in front of the other women.
“[On the subject] of football, you’re gonna need a helmet and a mouthguard to keep Nicolle’s tongue from down your throat,” Monica quipped.
Cheryl Steele
Cheryl was unfamiliar with the concept of a roast, but that didn’t stop her from crafting a savage insult.
“It makes sense you’re from Detroit, because you remind me of a Detroit-style pizza: crusty, cheesy, and square,” she told Mel.
Robin Rocha
Robin poked fun at Mel’s raspy voice.
“You always have something, like, in your throat,” Robin pointed out. “Is it maybe that you put your foot in your mouth too much?”
Nicolle Kate
Nicolle managed to work some improv into her set after Amy Kaplan got onstage and simply complained about doing all the housework in the Bachelor Mansion.
While discussing her controversial pool makeout with Mel, Nicolle said, “Amy was appalled. She had no words. And you can all thank me for that.”
Who went home on ‘The Golden Bachelor’ this week?
After the roast group date and solo dates with both Nicolle and Debbie Siebers, Mel had to eliminate four women at the rose ceremony.
Here are the contestants who didn’t make the cut:
Amy Kaplan, 63
Monica Brewer, 62
Monica Parham, 60
Terri Alani, 71
“The Golden Bachelor” airs on ABC on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Hulu the day after they air.
