British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay announced he underwent surgery for skin cancer in a post on social media Saturday, encouraging his audience to remember to wear sunscreen.
The “Masterchef” judge shared a post on Instagram featuring two photos: first, a side profile image showing a bandage covering part of his face and neck, and another showing a line of stitches spanning from his earlobe to the top of his neck.
“Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma thank you! Please don’t forget your sunscreen,” Ramsay wrote.
“I promise you it’s not a face lift!” he joked. “I’d need a refund.”
Basal cell carcinoma is a form of skin cancer originating in the basal cells and often appears on parts of the skin most exposed to the sun, including one’s face and neck, according to Mayo Clinic. Staying away from the sun and regularly wearing sunscreen could help guard against this type of cancer, Mayo Clinic added.
The World Health Organization notes that skin cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer diagnosed around the world, adding that over 1.5 million new cases were estimated in 2022.
This is not the first time Ramsay has shared a public service announcement with his followers on social media. In June 2024, he emphasized the importance of wearing a helmet when biking after revealing he suffered a “really bad accident” while riding his bicycle in Connecticut.
