In a candid interview, renowned chef and television personality Gordon Ramsay has revealed a key piece of advice for diners when it comes to navigating restaurant menus.
According to Ramsay, there is one particular menu item that he firmly believes customers should avoid ordering, regardless of the establishment.
“If there’s one thing I can tell people to steer clear of, it’s the specials,” Ramsay said bluntly. “Now, I know the specials can sound tempting, with their fancy descriptions and the promise of something unique. But trust me, that’s often a trap.”
Ramsay, who has built a culinary empire and become a household name thanks to his no-nonsense approach and uncompromising standards, explained that the specials on a menu can sometimes be a red flag for diners.
“Restaurants will use the specials as a way to get rid of ingredients that are about to go bad, or to feature dishes that aren’t selling well on the regular menu,” Ramsay revealed. “It’s a way for them to offload things and make a quick buck, rather than serving you something that’s truly special.”
The acclaimed chef went on to emphasize that while there may be legitimate, high-quality specials on occasion, the risks often outweigh the potential rewards.
“I’ve seen it time and time again – customers who order the specials end up disappointed, or even sick, because the restaurant is cutting corners,” Ramsay said. “It’s just not worth the gamble.”
Instead, Ramsay advises diners to stick to the tried-and-true items on the regular menu, which he believes are more likely to be prepared with care and attention to detail.
“If you want a truly great meal, focus on the classics, the dishes the restaurant is known for,” Ramsay suggested. “That’s where you’re going to find the quality, consistency, and the passion that goes into every bite.”
While Ramsay’s warning may disappoint those seeking a more adventurous dining experience, the renowned chef’s years of industry expertise lend credence to his advice.
“I know it can be tempting to try something new, but when it comes to eating out, it’s just not worth the risk,” Ramsay concluded. “Stick to what you know, and you’ll be sure to have a meal that’s truly special.”
