Gordon Ramsay has a very important message this Father’s Day: wear your helmets!
No, seriously, he told everyone about a truly terrifying biking experience that almost cost him his life, and the only reason he didn’t die was because he wore his helmet! It’s a great reminder to be honest, and he nailed it when he showed a rather graphic injury he got.
In a video uploaded to Instagram on June 15, Ramsay spoke about this harrowing experience, noting how he’s “lucky to be alive” right now. He posted the video with the caption reading, “Sound ON and plz Swipe through…..with #FathersDay tomorrow I have very important message for all the dads out there…WEAR A HELMET!”
He added, “This week I had a really bad accident while riding my bike in Connecticut. I’m doing ok and did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries but I am a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato. I’m thankful for all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawerence + Memorial Hospital in New London who looked after me and checked me out, but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life. Have a great Father’s Day and be safe Gx”
Then, in the video, Ramsay looks quite frazzled, which is so heartbreaking, and we hope he continues to rest amid his recovery.
“I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week and I’m sort of getting through it,” Ramsay said in the video, then lifting his uniform to reveal a huge, terrifyingly dark bruise that most of his torso. “I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care that these helmets cost money. They’re crucial. I’m lucky to be standing here.”
He ended by saying, “I want to wish you all a happy Father’s Day, but please, please, please wear a helmet. If I didn’t, honestly, I wouldn’t be here now.”
We’re not only happy that Ramsay is alive and getting treatment, but we’re happy he’s reminding cyclists of this message.
Yes, helmets aren’t the perfect protection from concussions, but they have been proven to reduce head injuries and death for cyclists.
In an analysis that reviewed more than 100,000 crashes involving cyclists, it was discovered that helmets reduced the risk of serious head injury in riders by 60 percent. And another analysis showed that 51 percent had a lower risk of developing a severe TBI and overall lower mortality rate.
