‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Destroyed Us Last Night-Derek, George, and even Doc returned to the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
We don’t need to tell you that Grey’s Anatomy has a way of making its fans cry during almost every episode. But Thursday night’s “Flowers Grow Out of My Grave” ending featured a montage that truly destroyed us.
The whole episode was intense, but we’ll focus on the main character: Meredith Grey was treating a patient whose family was celebrating Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday that honors family and friends who have died.
This had her thinking about all the people she’s lost in her life. In a truly shocking/heartbreaking/OMG-moment, the writers brought back Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Lexi Grey (Chyler Leigh), Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), and more familiar faces who have been killed off over the years.
Obviously, fans haven’t seen these characters in so long, and needless to say, it brought up some EMOTIONS. “Just watched Grey’s Anatomy new episode & when they showed Derek, George, Lexie & Mark …… I lost it,” one person wrote on Twitter. “OHMYGOSH the ending of this week’s Grey’s Anatomy episode. My heart was not ready for that,” wrote another.
The writers used old footage to make the magic happen, but that was on purpose — to really drive the sadness home, of course. “We have some iconic footage that the fans will immediately recognize: That shot of Derek, the fans who have watched the show multiple times know what episode that is from. There are iconic moments and shots that we pulled from moments that actually never aired on the show — like Mark [Eric Dane] with Derek,” producer Krista Vernoff told E Online.
