Help, I Can’t Stop Listening to Jamie Dornan’s ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ Cover From the Fifty Shades Freed Soundtrack
If you’ve seen Fifty Shades Freed, you know that the most important scene of the movie happens while Ana and Christian are away in Aspen with their friends. No, it’s not Elliot’s club proposal to Kate. That’s right. I’m talking about the scene of Christian singing at his piano while Ana, Mia, and Elliot look in pure amazement. How fitting, considering Christian’s song of choice was a cover of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed”?
Unfortunately, the moment lasts only for a few seconds. And I’m sad to report that Jamie Dornan’s version on the official soundtrack, which dropped Friday, is also short. Clocking in at 77 seconds, Jamie’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” leaves you well, hanging. The feeling might not be the same as what Ana goes through in the Red Room when Christian tries to show her how he feels when she “defies” him. But Jamie, where’s the full version? The world deserves to hear the rest of this gift, and you can’t tell me the recording equipment just stopped working after 77 seconds.
According to Jamie, there was actually a plan to have a longer version on the soundtrack, but it never happened. As he explained in an interview with ITV’s Lorraine Kelly, “They ended up just putting whatever wee bit we did the day on. I haven’t heard it. I presume it’s not very good.” After several listens (it’s not hard, considering the length), I beg to differ.
Yes, you can hear his accent in the song, but that’s part of the Fifty Shades Freed experience. Yes, yes, Jamie’s version is short, but that’s what the repeat button is for! And for those thinking, OK but he’s no Paul McCartney, you are absolutely right. No one can ever replace Paul and his perfect, wonderful song. But this bite-size version is nice to have while one thinks of purchasing a getaway home in Aspen (presumably, one that comes with a giant bathtub, piano, and a billionaire named Christian Grey).
Should you need to take a break from “Maybe I’m Amazed” after say, your 45th listen, do treat yourself to this throwback of Jamie singing with his folk band Sons of Jim. Get the band back together and go on tour. And throw in the cover! The crowd will eat it up!
