Both the family values and the commitment to telling the cops’ side of social issues were key features of Blue Bloods that made it different from other cop shows. Although CBS canceled the series, the network quickly developed a Blue Bloods spinoff. Boston Blue will hopefully carry on the Reagan legacy in a meaningful way, including correcting a serious oversight.
Blue Blood Was Notably Biased Against Internal Affairs Characters & Anti-Police Violence Protesters
These Characters Often Were Shown as Corrupt Or Unreasonable
One of the best things about Blue Bloods was that the writing was generally not agenda-driven. Each character had their own viewpoint, allowing audiences to make up their own minds about social issues. However, the series fell short of its usual objectivity when it came to Internal Affairs and anti-police violence protesters.
This oversight was understandable to an extent. Blue Bloods was more committed to showing the point of view of NYPD officers than other cop shows. Many police officers see Internal Affairs officers as traitors who are looking to get cops in trouble for doing their jobs and protesters as nuisances who blame all cops for those who act inappropriately.
For this reason, while Blue Bloods made an effort to paint corrupt cops as villains who didn’t deserve the badge, it didn’t give much grace to the people who were supposed to investigate such cops.
Boston Blue Has A Chance To Balance The Bias With A More Realistic Approach
It Can Show Protestors And Internal Affairs Agents In A Better Light
Boston Blue will also show the perspective of police officers. However, the primary family in Boston Blue will be interracial, which will provide a different and more nuanced perspective. It will be interesting to see how the new series approaches the issue of people of color being in law enforcement while being aware of racial bias in policing.
Danny will be the outsider who will likely have a different perspective than the rest of the Boston Blue cast of characters.
Danny will be the outsider who will likely have a different perspective than the rest of the Boston Blue cast of characters. This change in perspective will hopefully make Boston Blue a worthy successor to Blue Bloods that keeps everything that made the original great while improving unrealistic aspects.
