I Hope Ghosts Season 4’s New Non-Spirit Character Helps Sam’s Character Problem Before It Gets Worse

Ghosts season 4 will introduce a brand new non-spirit character in Sam’s dad, and I hope his arrival can address the issue with Rose McIver’s character before it gets worse. Despite my usual aversion to anything horror-related, I find myself enjoying this US version of a British comedy hit. Perhaps it’s because it leans more into comedy, which I love than its creepy side, but still, the show has an interesting premise — something that is reflected in its impressive Rotten Tomatoes score. As we wait for Ghosts season 4, however, I find myself having a major concern regarding Sam’s future.

It is not lost on me that Ghosts is an ensemble series. Even then, the title itself suggests that the main characters in the show are the spirits in the Woodstone Mansion, considering that they are the headliners. That said, I also want to point out that the events of Ghosts started with Sam. She inherited the manor, which resulted in them moving to Upstate New York. Her ability to see the spirits also plays a big part in the stories in the show. Amid all of these, however, Ghosts has slipped in terms of giving McIver’s character her due.

Dean Norris’ Frank Being Introduced Allows Ghosts Season 4 To Explore Sam’s Family

As previously confirmed, Dean Norris will guest-star in Ghosts as Frank — Sam’s dad. Not much is known about the character thus far, but the fact that he is played by the former Breaking Bad actor is enough to get my hopes up for his upcoming appearance. Frank is an absent father, considering the lack of any communication with Sam in the last three seasons of Ghosts. That said, it’s still great to meet him and learn about the kind of relationship that he has with his daughter. From what’s revealed in a new Ghosts trailer, he’s even staying at Woodstone.

That can’t be revisited, since Sheryl was already sucked off, but I’m hoping that Frank’s story is deeper in Ghosts season 4.

The last time we saw anyone related to Sam was in Ghosts season 1, when she and Jay visited her mother at a diner — Sheryl. That said, since she’s already dead, there wasn’t really much to do with her character. Personally, I would have loved for Ghosts to delve deeper into this particular storyline. While I’m not a fan of its supernatural aspect, I think that that narrative is grounded in family relationships — something that is more universal. That can’t be revisited, since Sheryl was already sucked off, but I’m hoping that Frank’s story is deeper in Ghosts season 4.

Sam Dealing With Family Gives Her A Personal Arc In Ghosts Season 4

Regardless of what kind of relationship Sam has with her father, I’m just glad that we get to see it explored in Ghosts season 4. Despite the importance of McIver in the comedy, I feel like she has been left out regarding personal character progress. Granted that she has had endeavors like the book and the podcast, but the majority of her storylines have been either tied to her relationship with Jay or the Woodstone Mansion ghosts. Sam hasn’t had a compelling narrative that is just about herself in a while, and this is a great way to do that.

Granted that it may have to do with the fact that McIver was pregnant during Ghosts season 3, but at least season 4 can make up for lost time by bringing in Frank. Seeing Sam deal with her dad, especially considering what we know about the relationship she had with her mother, will be a storyline that can be something entirely separate from the powers she has to communicate with the spirits. I’m sure Hetty and the rest will still be involved, but this father-daughter arc is more rooted in family ties rather than the supernatural aspect of Ghosts.
