If You’re Not Watching Will Trent Yet, Meet the Detective Who’s About to Steal Your Heart (and Solve Every Case)

ABC’s new series Will Trent debuts TONIGHT (January 3) and lots of fans will be introduced to actor Ramon Rodriguez, who plays the title role.

Here is the show’s synopsis: “Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the GBI.”

The new series will air on Tuesday nights at 10/9c on ABC.

So, who is Ramon and where do you know him from?

  1. You might know Ramon from his roles on The Wire or The Affair
Ramon played Renaldo in eight episodes of HBO’s beloved series The Wire. He most recently appeared in five episodes of Showtime’s The Affair as Ben Cruz.
  2. Ramon’s most recent movie role was in a Disney+ movie
Did you catch Ramon as George, the dad in the movie The One and Only Ivan?
  3. Ramon isn’t that active on social media
On his Instagram page, there are only two posts and they are both to promote Will Trent. It appears he likely wiped his page clean ahead of the show launch.
  4. Ramon fell in love with the role from the rescue dog scene.
“When I first read that scene in the pilot episode where Will is at the animal shelter and we see that he doesn’t want this dog, he doesn’t want anything to do with it, but he’s not going to leave the dog there. That grabbed my heart immediately,” Ramon told the Boston Herald, “and taught me so much about who this guy is. Like you immediately say, ‘Okay, this person has a lot of heart.’”
  5. Ramon didn’t interact much with “Will Trent” writer Karin Slaughter, who wrote the book series
“The beauty is, I had the books so that source material was really all I needed,” he told Newsweek. “It is a great foundation that’s laid in her books, that really describe and tell you about this character so, for me, just having that source was incredible. To be able to go to that, it’s sort of like a well that I get to continue to visit if I ever have questions about the character, instead of going to Karin. There’s something about going to what you she put down on the page and I think she did a great job of really fleshing out this character and what he’s been through, what makes him tick… The beautiful thing about adapting something is you want to honor what’s been written on the page, but you also are interpreting it and you’re making it a your own, and so being able to add additional colors to him has been a lot of fun.”
