I think the reality is that now that the series has established that Jay can’t see Ghosts, it risks jeopardizing the series’ future by changing that core premise. The American Ghosts series has received positive reviews and impressive numbers that have allowed it to continue, and part of that is due to its handling of Jay’s inability to see Ghosts. Jay delivers the perfect reactions to Sam’s ability to see the dead. Changing Utkarsh Ambudkar’s role risks a massive interruption to what he brings to the series.
While there are many positive elements about Jay being able to interact with the ghosts of the CBS series, the show would miss out on comedic elements that have just worked. For instance, in Ghosts season 2, Sam lets Jay read a family newsletter from the descendants of one of the ghosts to make him feel included. While he is reading, a vast hole opens on the floor, and Hetty’s former husband returns from hell, rendering Jay’s involvement insignificant. While disappointing for Jay, those moments are the comedic gold the show relies on.
