Jim Parsons Once Called This RPG “A Big Bang Theory Pep Rally”

Jim Parsons, best known for playing the iconic Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, has a fairly good grasp of geek culture. He spent a long time enveloped by it during his time on the set of the long-running sitcom, and likely still has the odd geek-related question thrown at him in interviews. Naturally, then, one would assume he has an affinity for video games and video game culture, including attending large events for them.

Unlike a lot of actors who love video games, Parsons admitted in a 2014 interview with Intel that he doesn’t really play them. Nevertheless, he still made an appearance at one major event for the launch of a critically acclaimed and beloved RPG that has not really been bested since. It was during this event that he compared it to The Big Bang Theory, which is naturally very high praise and something both fanbases should be excited about.

Jim Parsons Attended A Dragon Quest 9 Event Ahead Of Big Bang Theory Panel
It Was At The Dragon Quest IX Experience At The WIRED Cafe

Jim Parsons attended the Dragon Quest IX Experience at San Diego Comic Con back in 2010, which was celebrating the launch of the critically acclaimed game. Numerous celebrities also attended the event, including Thomas Jane, Zachery Levi, Anna Paquin, and more, but it was Parsons’ words that stuck out in particular. According to the Toronto Star, Parsons likened the DQ9 event to a Big Bang Theory pep rally, implying that there was a lot of buzz, excitement, and joy from fans throughout.

It is no surprise that there was so much excitement from fans around the launch of Dragon Quest IX, as it remains one of the highest-rated games in the series.

It is no surprise that there was so much excitement from fans around the launch of Dragon Quest IX, as it remains one of the highest-rated games in the series, sitting at a very impressive 87 on Metacritic. It is also still one of the greatest JRPGs ever made and a truly memorable and iconic Nintendo DS game. It honestly still sits at the top of my all-time favorite games list. While Parsons may have never gotten the pleasure of sinking hundreds of hours into it, it isn’t hard to imagine the exhilaration he felt during that event.

DQ9 & The Big Bang Theory Probably Do Have Crossover Fans
Both Are Part Of Geek Culture

It is also apt that Parsons compared a Dragon Quest IX launch event and the adoring fans who attended it to a Big Bang Theory one, considering they’re both so deeply rooted in geek culture. Dragon Quest has always been a more light-hearted, fun, and often goofy JRPG series, not unlike the heartfelt and comedy-focused Big Bang Theory. The vibes at a Dragon Quest IX event are almost certainly going to be akin to those at a Big Bang Theory one, as there is undoubtedly a lot of crossover between their fans.

Since 2010, Dragon Quest has moved on, as has The Big Bang Theory. Still, both have left a lasting legacy, with that magic that Parsons felt and made DQ9 so special lingering in the air. Here’s hoping that Jim Parsons’ words still resonate in 2025, and that Square Enix finally delivers a Dragon Quest 9 remake as it has with the first few games in the series, as it truly deserves a revival.
