Winsome thespian Kate Winslet has confirmed a universal truth: There was no reason for Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) to die in Titanic, because he could have fit on that makeshift raft.
On Monday night, Winslet appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Kimmel, doing God’s work, asked her how she felt about the upsetting ending of the seminal James Cameron film. Winslet responded by giving us this sweet, glorious closure:
“I agree, I think he could have actually fit on that bit of door,” she said.
Jack and Rose not being able to fit on the same chunk of a floating, broken-off door as the ship sank — leading to his death and her survival — is a gripe that has haunted this glorious movie since it was released in 1997. It’s been studied and debunked numerous times. But hearing from Winslet (who played Rose) that Jack and Rose could have shared the lifesaving piece of debris is like hearing the creator of the GIF pronounce it or the maker of that dress tell us what color it really is.
Clearly, Rose let Jack die. Jack could have made it, and they could have had “lots of babies” and “watched them grow.” And someday James Cameron will pay for this.
