Kate Winslet remains ‘good friends’ with ex husband

Threapleton, 34, who now lives in northern London with his new wife, special needs teacher Julie Vuorinen, has said the couple are at a good stage in their relationship, and he gets on well with her current husband, director Sam Mendes.

He flies to New York once a month to spend time with Mia, his daughter from his marriage to Winslet, 33, and said of Mendes: “He is a fantastic person to be in Mia’s life.

“Sam and I went out for a few beers together very early on to make sure there was no stand-offishness. No one wanted a situation where I’d pitch up in a car and honk the horn and wait for Mia to be delivered.

“There was a very amiable attempt to find a new future for all of us, which isn’t an easy thing to do, but I’m proud of what Kate has done with Mia and what we do collectively.”

Threapleton, who is expecting a baby with his new wife, added: “I think the assumption was that there’d be vitriol between Kate and me for years. But there isn’t, and there hasn’t been. It’s an evolution, but I think we’ve got to that good stage of friendship.”

Winslet and Threapleton met on the set of Hideous Kinky when he was an assistant director, following her success in 1997 blockbuster Titanic.

Daughter Mia was born in 2000, but they divorced in 2001.

She married Mendes in 2003 and gave birth to their son Joe in the same year, before moving to New York in 2005.

Earlier this week she appeared on the red carpet with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio at the Los Angeles premiere of Revolutionary Road, Mendes’ latest movie.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) shortlisted the British star for her performances in Revolutionary Road (best actress) and The Reader (best supporting actress). The roles have already earned her two Golden Globe nominations, and the Oscar Academy is expected to follow suit.
