Hollywood star Kate Winslet revealed that she was encouraged to “cover up her belly rolls” while filming her latest war-drama Lee.
The 48-year-old star, who is an outspoken advocate for body positivity, spoke out about the inappropriate comment in a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar. The Titanic star was outraged by the rude remark that came after she purposefully “softened” her body for the role.
Kate said the comment came from a crew member ahead of a scene wearing a bikini and sitting on a bench. She recalled that in between takes the staff member told her she should “You might want to sit up straighter.” To which Kate iconically fired back: “So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not on your life!”
The mother of two explained that she had intentionally stopped working out as frequently ahead of the role because she wanted to have a fuller apperance as she took on the complicated character of Lee Miller. Kate’s character Lee is based on a real-life woman who quit her successful modeling career and became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.
When questioned if it bothers her that she is no longer in the best shape of her life, Kate claimed she felt the complete opposite. She told the news outlet: “I take pride in it because it is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up.”
After nearly three decades in the spotlight, Kate said that she is used to having her looks under scrutinized, but she refuses to give into the pressure of hiding her age. During an interview with Vogue last September, Kate said that she was questioned if she “wanted to do something” about her wrinkles.
Kate insisted that she refuses to be ashamed of the passage of time and said that she feels happier in her skin with every passing day. She told the news outlet: “I’m more comfortable in myself as each year passes. It enables me to allow the opinions of others to evaporate.”
