Kate Winslet’s Confusing Hairstyle Is the New Main Character of Titanic

More than two decades ago, Kate Winslet iconically starred as Rose DeWitt Bukater in the 1997 romantic tragedy Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio’s boyishly charming Jack Dawson. The historical blockbuster cleaned house during the 1998 awards season, winning Golden Globes, Academy Awards, and Grammys—though neither Winslet nor DiCaprio won any acting awards, despite nominations. (The real win was their heartwarming friendship.)

Now, 25 years later, Paramount Pictures revealed a new Oscar-worthy main character of Titanic: Kate Winslet’s hair.

The film is set to relive its glory days when a remastered version is rereleased in theaters. Instead of promoting the 25th anniversary with the original, fondly remembered movie poster, Paramount Pictures had something different in mind. The new poster has dropped the titular ship, and instead highlights Jack and Rose’s warm embrace—except it’s a little hard to focus on the star-crossed lovers when Kate Winslet’s confusing hairstyle steals the show.

On one side of Winslet’s hair is a tightly coiled updo mirroring a style she wore frequently throughout the film; the other half of her hair cascades in loose waves. It’s a bizarre stylistic choice, and fans of the legendary film have questions.

It’s possible that the two hairstyles are purposely meant to represent two sides of Rose: one that’s prim and proper, to represent the Rose we first meet, and the other that’s as careless and free as Jack makes her feel. This theory is backed up by several fans.
Kate Winslet’s hairstyle on the poster is a choice, but it will (probably) not deter Titanic fans from filling up theaters to watch the ship sink and cry over Jack letting go.
