Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone Spinoff Makes No Sense Without These Crucial Unconfirmed Characters

Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone spinoff won’t make any sense unless two unconfirmed characters join the cast of Y: Marshals. Announced in spring 2025, Luke Grimes’ spinoff show will be a procedural on CBS, marking a first for Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise. The show will likely continue Kayce’s story, set up in Yellowstone season 5.

At the end of Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton sells the Yellowstone Ranch to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and the Broken Rock Tribe. Kayce’s decision frees him of the burden of protecting John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) ranch, but John’s youngest son will take on new dangers in his spinoff. Y: Marshals will put Kayce back on an elite team, joining a team of U.S. marshals.

Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone Spinoff Y: Marshals Must Include Monica & Tate

Monica puts a hand on Kayce's face in Yellowstone season 5

The official logline for Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone spinoff notes that Kayce will have to balance the “high psychological cost” of duty with his responsibilities to his family. The description promises that Kayce’s new gig will utilize his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL, serving in the region’s fight against violence. Read the logline below:

With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.

In a recent interview about why the Yellowstone star said yes to Kayce Dutton’s spinoff, Luke Grimes noted, “the studio and the network certainly didn’t want it to be over.” Still, he stated that familiar faces will reappear in his show. Therefore, Y: Marshals must include the key members of Kayce’s family, Tate (Brecken Merrill), and Monica (Kelsey Asbille).

Without Tate and Monica, Y: Marshals can’t adequately convey the psychological toll that comes with Kayce’s service. Kayce traditionally faced challenges in Yellowstone while balancing his career with his family. It sounds like Y: Marshals will continue leaning into Dutton’s tumultuous personal life, and it will need to include Tate and Monica to convey his challenges properly.

Kayce’s Family Has Big Stories To Explore

With plenty of questions left after Yellowstone season 5’s ending, Y: Marshals has many Tate and Monica stories to tell. Tate could run the East Camp ranch while his father is away at work, or he could attend school or receive training to become a fishing guide. Regardless, it will answer what’s next for the seventh-generation Dutton.

Monica also has story potential untapped by Yellowstone. Kayce’s wife lost her baby in Yellowstone season 5’s premiere, and she and her husband have talked about trying again. Therefore, Kayce Dutton could have another child in Y: Marshals, raising the stakes for Dutton’s new career and his need to balance it with life at home.

Yellowstone is a neo-Western drama series created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, centered on the Dutton family and their fight to protect the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch from various adversaries, including land developers and nearby reservations. Premiering in 2018 on Paramount Network, the show has been praised for its depiction of power struggles, family loyalty, and rural conflicts. It has expanded into a franchise with spin-offs such as 1883 and 1923, and an upcoming sequel series is in development.
