Kayce’s Yellowstone Spinoff Won’t Return To A Key Location, Revealing The Show Will “Feel Like A Different World”

The Kayce Dutton-focused Yellowstone sequel show won’t be returning to a key location, feeling “like a different world.” Following Yellowstone’s 2024 ending, Paramount+ and CBS have already announced several titles that will expand on the franchise, including the solo Kayce Dutton spin-off series Y: Marshals, which will lend itself more to a traditional procedural drama.

Speaking with Esquire while doing press for his new film, Eddington, Kayce Dutton actor Luke Grimes shared some insights into the new project. He revealed that, while the new show would have familiar faces, making connections to Yellowstone, the series itself won’t be shot in Montana. He claims that it will feel like a different world, but that “Kayce will be ready for it.”

What Luke Grimes’ Y: Marshals Reveal Means

The New Yellowstone Spin-Off Is Appropriately Distancing Itself

While Yellowstone is a beloved, widely-viewed series, creating evident justification for spawning a franchise of spin-offs, it makes sense why this new show would seek out an identity of its own. One way to do this is by establishing a new tone and aesthetic, which can be done by a filming location change.

Regardless of how one feels about Yellowstone season 5, part 2, this new series is on a different network with a different premise. With the pivot in mind, Y: Marshals needs to be capable of bringing in viewership from those who haven’t seen the original show. The budget also might be lower, which would constitute filming elsewhere.

Although they’re not shooting in Montana, the show’s setting might still be in the state, not far from the Dutton Ranch.

Although they’re not shooting in Montana, the show’s setting might still be in the state, not far from the Dutton Ranch. This would mean potential for crossovers with other characters like Thomas Rainwater, or Beth and Rip, who are getting a spin-off sequel show of their own that’s likely to follow suit more closely to the original.

As Luke Grimes mentions in the Esquire article, he waited around for a compelling narrative idea before agreeing to return as Kayce. While the premise of him becoming a marshal might counteract his arc in Yellowstone, it seems like the new show’s premise had enough juice to compel the person who knows Kayce Dutton better than anyone.

Our Take On Y: Marshal’s Filming Location Change

Y: Marshal Needs To Feel Like A Yellowstone Spin-Off

Regardless of whether the new TV show is simply not shot in Montana or if it’s not set in Montana altogether, the vibrant imagery of the Dutton Ranch will be missed. The natural beauty of the Yellowstone mountain valley was a crucial element to the original series.

While I generally trust that Luke Grimes wants to pursue an interesting story for this character, it’s integral that it feels something like Yellowstone, lest they just use his character for branding purposes.
