Kevin Costner hasn’t entirely ruled out making a return to “Yellowstone” as the hit Paramount Network drama series moves towards its final season. Costner and the production faced challenges when he was simultaneously working on directing his Warner Bros. Western epic, “Horizon,” while filming Season 5 of “Yellowstone.” As tensions escalated, Costner claims that Paramount and series creator Taylor Sheridan decided to part ways, with Sheridan now reportedly considering a final season of the show without Costner.
“I’d like to be able to do it, but we haven’t been able to,” Costner told Entertainment Tonight about his potential return. “I thought I was going to make it to seven [seasons], but right now we’re at five. How it works out—I hope it does—but they have a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with it, I’d love to do it.”
Costner had previously revealed that he was offered $24 million to star in Seasons 5, 6, and 7. However, conflicts arose when he sought to reduce his filming schedule for the latter part of Season 5 to just one week.
The first half of Season 5 began airing in November 2022 and concluded in January 2023. Due to creative differences between Costner and the production, Paramount announced that the second half of Season 5 would serve as the series finale, while Sheridan is working on a new spinoff set in the same universe, potentially featuring Matthew McConaughey. This sequel series is expected to debut in December.
The “Yellowstone” franchise remains vital to Paramount, with its spinoffs bolstering the Paramount+ streaming service, and the original series continuing to draw strong ratings on CBS.
Meanwhile, Costner is busy with the release of his two-part film epic “Horizon” this summer, with plans to film two additional installments to complete the saga, a project he’s been working to realize for decades.
Filming for the final episodes of “Yellowstone” is scheduled to take place this spring.
