Kevin Costner paid tribute to his on-screen father in a touching tribute Saturday.
The late actor, who passed away at the age of 92, worked with the Oscar winner on Yellowstone, starring as John Dutton, Sr.
Costner, 69, took time from his busy schedule in Cannes, where he’s promoting his latest project, to honor the journeyman actor.
In a post, shared to his Instagram Story, the actor posted three stills from a touching scene with Coleman, writing, ‘One of the most heart wrenching scenes I’ve been a part of.’
‘What an honor to have gotten to work with Dabney Coleman. May he rest in peace,’ he continued.
Coleman appeared in one episode of Yellowstone as the father of Costner’s character, John Dutton.
During one of their final scenes together, John unplugs his father’s IVs, removes him from his hospital bed and helps him into his riding gear.
He and John Dutton Sr. go on to ride together on their family’s ranch and take a few sips of whiskey from a flask.
Then, John Dutton Sr., famously tells his son: ‘Don’t let ’em take it away from you son, not a god**m inch.’
Earlier this week, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan also honored the late actor, who was a mentor early in his career.
‘I had the opportunity to work with Dabney in 2003, and learned priceless lessons in the power of simplicity as an artist, but more importantly I witnessed Dabney’s humility, grace, and patience (with my 10,000 questions)’ he told Deadline.
‘I never forgot those lessons, and was humbled myself when he agreed to appear on Yellowstone,’ the writer said.
‘His performance was yet another lesson in bravery and emotional honesty.’
‘Dabney Coleman is a treasure. He will be missed and admired, always.’
Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was scheduled to screen out-of-competition at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday.
‘I’d like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including my film Horizon: An American Saga in this year’s selection,’ the write and director said in a statement.
‘It’s been 20 years since I’ve had the pleasure of being on the Croisette. I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come.’
The actor, writer and director said he had been working on the story for decades.
‘Horizon: An American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure.’
‘The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film.’
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will open in theaters June 28.
