The cast for Mel’s late mother and biological father in the upcoming Virgin River flashbacks has been unveiled.
As first reported by Deadline, Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr will portray Sarah and Everett in Season 6 of the Netflix series. These recurring characters are being introduced as part of the streamer’s plans for a prequel series exploring Sarah and Everett’s origin story. If all goes well, Rothe and Kerr will lead the spinoff.
Set primarily in 1972, Sarah (Rothe) is described as a witty, free-spirited activist from the city, eager to escape the traditional path expected of young women in the ’70s. Always seeking adventure, she can’t resist the immediate connection she feels with Everett (Kerr), a charming musician who might be her destined soulmate.
Netflix has teased scenes of their first encounter, where Sarah, while hitchhiking, is picked up by Everett in his VW van.
Everett’s identity as Mel’s biological father was revealed during the Virgin River Season 5 Christmas special. Initially rejected by him, Mel’s long-held wish comes true when he arrives on Christmas. Just as he begins to share something significant, the moment is interrupted.
Season 6 promises to clarify many unanswered questions.
Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith previously stated that Season 6 will delve into “who Everett Reid is, his backstory, his connection to Virgin River when he met Mel’s mother, and what it means for his relationship with Mel today.”
Virgin River is expected to return in late 2024.
