A star from the E4 soap Hollyoaks has secured a huge role in the next season of Netflix’s Virgin River.
Virgin River has welcomed an actor from the dramatic soap Hollyoaks to its cast ahead of season 6. Callum Kerr, who played George Kiss on the E4 show, has excitingly landed a recurring role on the popular Netflix show.
The romantic drama, based on Robyn Carr’s beloved book series, sees nurse practitioner and midwife Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) move from Los Angeles to a remote Californian town to start again after the death of her husband and unborn baby.
Season 6 will feature flashbacks to the life of Mel’s dad in the 1970s, and the younger version of this character will be portrayed by Kerr. It comes after Mel was finally reunited with her biological father Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson) during the series five Christmas special.
Now, fans can expect to travel back to the 1970s to see Mel’s late mother Sarah (Jessica Rothe) and biological father in a series of scenes over the course of the season. Netflix is also reportedly introducing the recurring characters with the intent to potentially expand the Virgin River universe with a spin-off prequel show that would follow Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
A new plot synopsis reads: “Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth instalment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles [and] delightful wedding drama.” It has also been promised season six will delve into “uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s.”
Kerr, who has also starred in Monarch and the TV mini-series Flowers in the Attic: The Origin, confirmed the happy news of his signing in view of his 524,000 Instagram followers.
In a new post, he wrote: “Been keeping this one hush for a while. Over the moon to announce that I’ll be joining the Virgin River universe exclusively on Netflix.
“Working alongside @jessica_rothe – the characters are introduced in Season 6 of the show – and in the meantime, Netflix are developing a potential spinoff series for said characters. Exciting times indeed!!”
Fans were thrilled for the actor, with one commenting: “Love that show! Congratulations.”
“Shut your face, sir! So excited for you!” another wrote, while a third penned: “Incredible!! I love this show – congrats Callum!!”
It comes after Kerr’s character George was involved in a pretty heavy storyline before his departure from Hollyoaks.
The policeman has been engaging in abusive and controlling behaviour towards his boyfriend John Paul McQueen (James Sutton).
However, he met his rather dramatic downfall in 2021, when he was confronted by Theresa McQueen (Jorgie Porter) and Sally St. Claire (Annie Wallace) before he could leave the village unscathed.
