Creator Dick Wolf dominates NBC as he’s responsible for two franchises that are very popular on the network! Those are Law & Order, as well as the One Chicago franchise. He’s got a lot of projects to juggle, but this guy is a pro. So what’s the latest news about Law and Order: Organized Crime season 4?
The crime drama first premiered in April 2021 and is the seventh show in the franchise overall. it serves as a direct spin-off to the flagship series, as well as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Wolf also serves as an executive producer alongside Ilene Chaiken, Arthur W. Forney, Peter Jankowski, Fred Berner, Terry Miller, and Christopher Meloni. There will be a season 4 of Law and Order Organized Crime! The television production has not been canceled. We actually got the renewal news in April 2023, about a month before the season 3 finale was even broadcast. Honestly, this definitely doesn’t come as a surprise to me! The franchise is popular on NBC. And drum roll please, we have the release date!
Law and Order: Organized Crime season 4 premieres Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. Episodes will be available to stream on Peacock the next day. It is the last Law & Order show of the night, with SVU and and Law & Order airing right before it. There will be a total of 13 episodes.
Even though it’s not coming this year, and it was initially supposed to return for the fall 2023 television schedule, most networks have pushed their fall content to the new year and this is just the norm this time around. We’re just so happy to see the series on the midseason schedule!
If you want to rewatch older episodes in the meantime, unfortunatley none of the previous seasons are currently streaming on Peacock or another platform. The only way to watch is by purchasing the episodes/seasons on platforms like YouTube, Vudu, and Prime Video.
Is the crime drama affected by the strikes?
Many shows across Hollywood have had to pause production due to the writers strike and the actors strike. That means no work was being done when it came to the scripts and filming. Organized Crime falls under this category. But, that’s not why we don’t have a release date yet.
Initially, shows like Law and Order season 23 and Chicago PD season 11 were a part of NBC’s fall 2023 schedule. The crime drama was supposed to air new episodes on Thursday nights, while the police procedural would have taken over Wednesday nights. Since then, the network has had to revise its schedule and is now relying on competition shows, as well as reruns.
However when NBC shared its very first schedule, the company was already planning on bringing Law and Order: Organized Crime season 4 back in the midseason instead of the fall due to the change in showrunners, per Variety. David Graziano has officially passed the baton over to John Shiban. So the strikes were not the cause of a 2024 premiere date.
Jeff Bader, president, entertainment program planning strategy of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming told the news outlet that moving the premiere of the new season to the midseason schedule is a good idea. Here’s what he said:
“They will actually benefit from having a little time and the show will come back as part of the Thursday night stack in midseason.”
On Sept. 25, 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) who represents the big studios came to an agreement after months of the writers strike. Members of the guild voted and ratified the new contract, which is in effect through May 1, 2026. The writer room has officially reopened, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that Organized Crime will not be one of the first Dick Wolf shows back when the actors strike is over.
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement as of Nov. 9, 2023. Members of the guild still need to vote on the proposed three-year agreement to approve it. Though this does mean that the actors strike is over!
