Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) is back, and it’s about to reach its biggest milestone yet.
The NBC crime drama is returning with its 23rd season, which will feature the 500th episode since it started airing in 1999.

With 494 episodes so far, the milestone will be reached during the series’ sixth episode though it is currently unclear if it will have a special storyline to celebrate the occasion.

Here is everything you need to know about the forthcoming season.
When is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 23 out?
Law & Order: SVU will return to its home of NBC with a two-hour season premiere, and it will be released on the channel weekly after that.

The crime drama will be premiering on the channel on September 23 with back-to-back episodes “And the Empire Strikes Back” and “Never Turn Your Back on Them.”
Who will star in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 23?
Mariska Hargitay will return as Captain Olivia Benson, and she is joined by series regular Ice-T as Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola.
Also returning to the team is Kelli Giddish as Detective 2nd Grade Amanda Rollins and Peter Scanavino as ADA Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr.

Season 23 will be the last for Jamie Gray Hyder and Demore Barnes as Detective 3rd Grade Katriona “Kat” Tamin and Deputy Chief Christian Garland respectively; the pair will depart the show following the premiere.

Law & Order: Organized Crime stars Christopher Meloni and Danielle Moné Truitt will also make guest appearances as Detective 1st Grade Elliot Stabler and Sergeant Ayanna Bell.
What will happen in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 23?
In the double-bill, Liv and the team will work with sex trafficker Dr. Catalina Machado to expose a congressman, named George Howard, who is involved in similar crimes.

But the politician, who has sights on the Presidency, will stop at nothing to make sure the SVU team won’t catch him, even if it means getting them thrown out of their jobs—or worse.

The details of two more episodes have been confirmed for the season, though the full number of episodes has yet to be announced.
As well as the two-hour premiere, the series will also include episodes titles “I Thought You Were on My Side” and “One More Tale of Two Victims”.
