“Lies, Blood, and Cliffhangers”: ‘Tracker’ Boss Teases Explosive Family Drama in Season 3

The hit CBS drama series Tracker ended its second season run this past Sunday with an episode titled “Echo Ridge.” The Justin Hartley-led CBS procedural ended on a spicy cliffhanger as Hartley’s Colter Shaw finally meets the one responsible for pushing his father, Ashton Shaw (Lee Tergesen), to his death. While Otto (Shane Leydon) might have shoved Ashton off the cliff, the episode reveals that Colter’s mother, Mary (Wendy Crewson), was the mastermind. It’s likely to be an earth-shattering moment for Colter when Season 3 arrives, and showrunner Elwood Reid has teased what comes next for Colter and his family.

“I think Colter is going to get an answer; he’s going to get some lies,” Reid tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I mean, look, it’s families. Families are fucking messy. Family will lie to your face. What’s interesting about Colter, it’s like, what does he do with whatever his mom tells him? Does he believe her? Can he forgive her, even if she tells him the whole truth? I don’t know,” It would be interesting to see first, what Colter does with the man who shoved his father and what he does with his mother. Given that he has grown up believing that his elder brother, Russell (Jensen Ackles), was responsible for their father’s death, it might be a tough pill to swallow.

The Dark Past of the Shaw Family Will be Uncovered in ‘Tracker’ Season 3

The Shaw family is riddled with secrets, some of which have begun to slip out the more Colter probes. Mary was responsible for the feud which existed between her boys, and her daughter, Dory, seemed to have always suspected that Mary knew more. Reid reveals that come Season 3, the Shaw family secrets will have extra light shone on them, adding:

“I think there is a much bigger mystery with what his father was up to that caused him to go off the deep end, that I think we’re going to get into as the season goes on, and hopefully be able to bring back his sister, his brother. We’re going to play with those things. I think that’s what makes the show special, to have that emotional element.”

Tracker has already been renewed for a third season on CBS, which means the explosive revelation about Mary will be explored properly. That will likely mean a family reunion of sorts which would bring together Hartley’s Colter, Ackles’ Russell, and Melissa Roxburgh’s Dory. Exactly how Colter’s siblings receive the news is anybody’s guess, but showrunner Reid will have to play his cards right if he will be able to get Roxburgh and Ackles to flesh out this storyline. The showrunner recently revealed that scheduling has been a challenge:

“It’s so fucking hard to get their schedules. I mean, Jensen and I are friends. He was on a previous show of mine \[Big Sky]. I love the guy. I text him all the time. I’m like, I’ll take three hours of you. He’s very busy as you know in The Boys universe. So when we can get him, we can get him.”

Seasons 1 and 2 of Tracker are now streaming on Paramount+.
