Tracker Season 2, Episode 13, “Neptune” saw Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) get into quite a bit of trouble as he attempted to find a woman who went missing from a dressing room. It looked to be a pretty regular case, but in classic Tracker fashion, it turned complicated fast, with the woman turning out to be a spy who went dark and whose husband was kidnapped. Soon, Colter was briefed on the case the case and found himself in danger more than once before the episode was over. It seems like his days of running around without someone to have his back so really be coming to a close. But is it time for Colter Shaw to get a partner on Tracker? And, is there anyone he would even trust to do the job?
It’s hard to argue with the fact that Colter became the tracker because he didn’t want a partner in the first place. Colter Shaw is a lone wolf. Plus, there are his numerous family issues — not to mention his problems in the romantic department. And he has a lot of trouble trusting people, which is why he always prefers to work alone. He works well with Velma (Abby McEnany), has been able to work with both Bobby and Randy for their tech help, and has even collaborated with Reenie when he needs legal assistance. But that’s because he’s not working with them in the field. It’s very easy to work with people when you only have to work with them for a minute or two every once in a while on a call.
But that also means those people can’t effectively have your back when you’re in a real jam or when someone’s shooting at you. Colter found himself in a jam this episode, and this isn’t the first time he’s landed himself in real danger in the course of the show. And Tracker has had to find increasingly ingenious ways to get him out of problems in solutions that don’t always make sense. What would make more sense is giving him a partner.
And sure, giving the man a partner would involve pushing him out of his comfort zone, but at this point, wouldn’t that be a good thing? The show is fun as is, and people clearly enjoy it for what it is, but can it really go into Season 3 and beyond with the same premise without becoming stale? People enjoy procedures that are a back-and-forth between partners solving mysteries (look at Maggie and OA on FBI), and they clearly enjoy Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw. Maybe they will enjoy a combination of the two.
Tracker already changed a lot of the dynamics of the show by writing out Teddi in the Season 2 premiere, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for them to introduce such a big change. And we’ve seen Colter Shaw’s family come and go already. So perhaps they could be brought back again. Either way, it’s about time something changes, because the man continues to get in trouble by himself and he can’t just keep dialing a phone hoping someone picks up and can help him.
