One of The Rookie season 7’s biggest questions revolves around Tim and Lucy’s will-they/won’t-they get back together plotline, and after episode 12, it’s easy to see where this story is headed. The fan-favorite relationship has been through a lot over the course of the ABC show’s seven seasons. Tim and Lucy met during the pilot when he was assigned as her training officer, and slowly but surely, they became friends. In season 5, after Lucy had already graduated from the LAPD’s rookie program, the two Rookie characters developed romantic feelings for one another and started dating.
The Rookie season 7 airs on Tuesdays at 9 pm ET on ABC. Following “April Fools,” only six episodes remain in The Rookie season 7, meaning the finale will premiere in May.
Unfortunately, the couple’s bliss didn’t last long. Tim broke up with Lucy in The Rookie season 6, thinking he wasn’t good enough to be with her. Since then, Tim has been working on himself by attending therapy and becoming the man he believes Lucy deserves. It has always been clear that Tim still wants to be with Lucy. While the same could technically be said for Lucy, Tim hurt her badly, which has made her hesitant to open up. However, her actions in The Rookie season 7, episode 12, “April Fools,” demonstrate her true feelings on the matter.
The Holiday Gives The Former Couple A Hall Pass
Eric Winter as Tim Bradford and Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen in The Rookie season 7, episode 12
At the beginning of The Rookie season 7, episode 12, Lucy shows up on Tim’s doorstep with a proposition — to use April Fools’ Day as an excuse to hook up. She explains that they can have a hall pass for the day, and if anyone catches them together, they can laugh and pretend that it was all just a prank to celebrate the holiday. Tim, who is obviously positively smitten and willing to do whatever Lucy says, agrees.
So, for the entirety of The Rookie episode, Tim and Lucy forego their tragic breakup by hooking up and sneaking into closets at Mid-Wilshire to make out. At first, Celina is the only one who catches on to the former couple’s sneaky behavior. At the end of the hour, though, Lieutenant Grey calls Tim and Lucy into his office to scold them for not telling him they had gotten back together.
Since Tim is back to being Lucy’s superior, Grey is quite frustrated about the situation. However, like Tim and Lucy previously promised, they laugh and claim it was just a joke, which results in Grey pulling a prank of his own by faking a heart attack. Grey then dismisses Tim and Lucy, who decide to spend the remainder of April Fools’ Day rushing to his house for one last hookup in The Rookie season 7, episode 12.
Lucy Initiating The Prank Revealed Her True Feelings For Tim & Their Situation
Lucy Obviously Still Wants To Be With Tim
Although Tim and Lucy didn’t rekindle their romance in The Rookie season 7, episode 12, their actions confirmed that she is almost ready to get back together with him. “April Fools” isn’t the first episode featuring Lucy using a holiday as an excuse to hook up with Tim. Back in episode 6, Tim and Lucy fell back into bed together on Valentine’s Day. At first, Lucy was quite hesitant to do so, and she even acted awkward the next morning. She was so apprehensive about the situation, but all those jitters were nowhere to be found in episode 12.

I’m Worried That The Rookie Season 7 Is Repeating Season 6’s Mistakes With A Villain Return
While one villain’s return in The Rookie season 7 is initially exciting, new information suggests it will only lead to disappointment for the show.
Lucy is much more confident and comfortable about the idea of her and Tim hooking up in The Rookie season 7, episode 12. Of course, a purely sexual relationship isn’t going to fix them. They must talk about their breakup and the problems that led up to it before they can fully rekindle their romance. Nevertheless, Lucy’s willingness to be with Tim is a good thing. They are slowly making their way back to one another, indicating that it’s only a matter of time before Tim and Lucy get back together in The Rookie.
How Long Can The Rookie Still Stretch Out This Relationship Purgatory Plot For Chenford?
Based on Tim and Lucy’s story in The Rookie season 7 so far, the couple will likely get back together by the finale. One season of depicting the push and pull of their broken relationship is enough time to build up to their highly anticipated reunion. However, ABC renewed the police procedural series for an eighth season (per TVLine). The writers and producers may want to stretch out “Chenford’s” breakup even longer, now knowing there is more time to do. It’s more likely that fans will see Tim and Lucy rekindle their romance by the end of The Rookie season 7, though.
