Mark Harmon is returning as Gibbs for NCIS: Origins crossover event

Mark your calendars, everyone, because Mark Harmon is officially reprising his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS: Origins next month.

The actor, who starred as Gibbs for over 18 seasons on NCIS, will make a special guest appearance as part of the first-ever crossover event between the flagship series and its prequel on Nov. 11. The crossover will see the younger version of Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) and his Origins teammates investigate the death of a naval officer in the 1990s, only for the case to be unexpectedly re-opened over three decades later on NCIS.

“I’m very proud of the storytelling that David and Gina are doing on Origins,” Harmon said in a press release. “They continue to push boundaries and dive deeper into the characters’ backstories. They came to me with an idea for Gibbs that I liked, and it seemed like a good time to check in with him. I hope fans enjoy it.”

In order to properly tell its decades-spanning mystery, Origins and NCIS will be switching their respective time slots for the evening. Origins will air first at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with NCIS following afterward at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

“Four years ago, Gibbs disappeared to Alaska to live a life of solitude,” co-showrunners and executive producers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal said in a statement. “We know how much fans have missed seeing Mark and have wondered what Gibbs is up to today.”

The statement continued, “Well, on Nov. 11, we’re so excited to announce that Mark Harmon will return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the Origins hour of the NCIS crossover event. We don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say Gibbs is no longer alone.”

While Harmon may have officially exited NCIS in 2021, he remains an integral part of the ongoing NCIS-verse. Not only is he an executive producer on both NCIS and Origins, but he also narrates the prequel series and made a brief appearance in its very first episode last year.

The NCIS and Origins crossover event will air on Nov. 11 on CBS, and will also be available on streaming on Paramount+.
