“When I was first diagnosed with cancer, my world changed overnight,” Barrett begins in her heartfelt statement to fans. “Suddenly, everything slowed down. Barrett, who has portrayed charge nurse Maggie Lockwood since Season 1, quietly stepped away from the show at the start of Season 11 to focus on her health. Her absence left fans with questions — and a deep longing to see the heart of the ED return. Now, as she makes a powerful comeback, Barrett is using her voice to shed light on resilience, recovery, and the unexpected healing power of storytelling.
“Walking back onto the set of Chicago Med after everything I’ve been through — the surgeries, the treatments, the quiet nights full of prayer — it was overwhelming in the most beautiful way. I didn’t just return to a job. I returned to a purpose. Maggie Lockwood has always been a fighter. Playing her again reminded me that I am, too.”
