Mary Moves On After George Sr.’s Death in Georgie & Mandy Season 2

When Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage returns this fall on CBS, Georgie’s mother Mary Cooper will begin to explore a romantic life after George Sr.’s death on Young Shelton. When Young Sheldon ended after seven seasons, Montana Jordan and Emily Osment returned to The Big Bang Theory universe in their own spinoff.

Some Young Sheldon stars have made guest appearances, including Zoe Perry as Mary and Raegan Revord as Georgie’s sister Missy, which will continue during Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2, episode 3, titled “A Will and a Dead Man’s Wife”, will see Mary consider going on a date, according to co-creator Steve Holland, who spoke to TVLine. Over a year has passed since her husband’s death, and Mary will be forced to confront the “repercussions” that occur as a result of her decision:

The headline of the episode is Mary is considering going out on a date…[and the] repercussions that that wreaks across the family.

It was really interesting to shoot [there] again because it’s [now] a multi-cam set. There’s not as many people at the table as there once was, but it’s a classic Cooper dinner scene.

The dining room from Young Sheldon will be featured in the third episode as several family members, including Missy, eat dinner together. It will be a “classic Cooper dinner scene,” according to Holland. While not confirmed, it’s possible that Mary will tell her family about her desire to date again while they’re sharing a meal.

Not counting Sheldon, who’s off attending college during the timeline of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, the main family member who will be missing from this important scene in the dining room is Mary’s mother, Connie Tucker. A scheduling conflict is preventing actress Annie Potts from appearing in the episode since she is now a cast member on Best Medicine:

We’re certainly talking about it. I think she would love to come back. We would love to have her back. The scheduling for that hasn’t worked out yet, but I’m optimistic that it will at some point this season. She’s such a part of the family, and she’s just such a force of nature. But it’s not just another show — it’s another show that shoots on the other side of the country, so it’s tricky for her to fly back for 24 hours and then fly back to New York.

While fans won’t see Connie in this episode (though Holland is “optimistic” about an appearance at some point this season), the rest of the Cooper family will play significant roles. If Georgie and Missy disapprove of their mother moving on after the death of their father, it could result in Mary choosing not to date at all.

There will likely be a lot of conflicting feelings across the board. The kids might feel like Mary’s trying to find a replacement for George Sr.

Even though Mary is not a main cast member in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, this Young Sheldon spinoff has been an important vessel for various characters to continue their storylines. Mary thinking about going on a date is a major step for the widow.

Exploring this storyline in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage allows the character to experience a key character development that fans wouldn’t have gotten otherwise if CBS hadn’t ordered this spinoff.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 premieres Thursday, October 16 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
