Mayim Bialik has revealed why the proposed Blossom revival didn’t happen. Blossom was a sitcom that focused on the titular teenager coping with growing up after her mom’s departure left her alone with her brothers and father. Blossom is an acclaimed sitcom that aired for five seasons from 1991 until 1995.
After Blossom, Bialik cemented her sitcom resume by joining The Big Bang Theory’s cast and starring in Call Me Kat. After that, rumors left fans wanting to know everything about the potential Blossom revival series. Even though initial hopes that the show might happen were high, Bialik has now revealed why the Blossom revival wasn’t produced.
Bialik wrote about the revival that didn’t happen on her Substack. That post featured Bialik’s description of the script that Blossom creator Don Reo wrote for the classic sitcom’s potential comeback. On top of providing a general description of the script, Bialik called Reo’s work “beautiful.” Check out Bialik’s comments below:
He found our characters exactly where many of us find ourselves – funny, lost, wandering, meandering, and torn. The script is beautiful.
In her Substack piece, Bialik went on to write that Disney executives initially loved the script too. That left Bialik feeling so confident that the revival would happen that she spoke about it publicly. However, new executives being put in charge resulted in the project being abandoned.
They seemed to love it, understood what we wanted to do, and Don and I felt comfortable to speak about it in the press. We felt certain this was moving forward…
[Then,] for no particular reason, we were told ’no.’ We asked for the rights so that we could let the market decide if audiences might want to see these characters all these years later. We were told Disney reserves the rights in case they ever want to do a reboot of Blossom. The reboot we all wanted to do was now, with Don’s script. We will likely never know … why they would not let us bring these beautiful stories to people who love 90s nostalgia and who have a special place in their hearts for Blossom.
While Bialik’s attempts to get the Blossom revival off the ground haven’t worked, she hasn’t given up on the project. Instead, Bialik hopes that the revival series will still have a future.
I hope there will be more to this story someday. But for now, the Gd’s honest truth is this project is the role I want to play more than any other. Since this all fell apart, my desire to continue to pursue on-camera roles has waned. The constant changing of guards in our industry, the mergers, the insincerity and the increasingly extended periods of time it takes to get answers or contracts completed… It’s not the industry Don and I grew up in, and Blossom felt like my last attempt to try and assert myself as an actress.
While it is possible no one wants a Blossom reboot, I’m pretty certain Disney got this one wrong. The sun is gonna surely shine. Maybe not the way Don and I intended, but this door closed. While we didn’t want it to, we are powerless over every aspect of it except what we know to be true: we loved this possibility with all that we have and we are so so sorry we couldn’t get it to happen.
What This Means For The Blossom Revival’s Future
Based on what Bialik wrote on Substack, it seems like the Blossom revival won’t come to fruition. After all, the fact that Disney executives rejected the project seemingly shuts the door on the series returning. There is another reason to think that the Blossom revival may never be produced.
In Bialik’s Substack post, she wrote that work on the Blossom revival started after The Big Bang Theory’s 2019 cancellation. In November 2019, Disney+ was launched, and the company seemed like they were in a mad dash to produce original content. That dynamic has changed since then.
In 2024, Disney revealed their plan to produce fewer Star Wars shows, and similar statements were made about streamlining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With that in mind, Disney may be more cautious with the number of original sitcoms they produce as well.
Our Take On The Proposed Blossom Revival
It has been more than three decades since Blossom’s finale originally aired, and many people seem to have forgotten how brilliant the show was. Often hilarious, the show also told a compelling story about a young woman in a sitcom ecosystem that was dominated by men. Sadly, the male dominance of the sitcom landscape hasn’t changed much since that time.
The Blossom revival would likely have been funny and put a smart female character in the lead again. That would have been wonderful. The fact that Bialik loved the revival’s script also makes it seem like producing the show should have been a no-brainer. I’m disappointed that something went awry, and the Blossom revival seemingly won’t see the light of day.
