Actress Annie Potts has been cast as Sheldon’s Meemaw in the new CBS series, “Young Sheldon,” a prequel to The Big Bang Theory. Potts’ character will have a regular role in the story.

Sheldon’s grandmother had only previously appeared in season 9 of The Big Bang Theory, played by actress June Squibb. However, Sheldon regularly mentioned her, always with affection and respect, as this strong woman was a great support to him throughout his life. That, and because she gave him so many gifts.

Young Sheldon centers on the life of 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper, living with his family in East Texas and attending high school. Steve Molaro will executive produce, the same role he served on The Big Bang Theory, under the direction of Lorre and Parsons. Jim also serves as the story’s single-camera narrator.

For Annie Potts, Young Sheldon represents her latest television work since Designing Women, GCB, Any Day Now, and Love & War.

Young Sheldon will premiere with a special on September 25 at 8:30 PM ET/PT, immediately following the Season 11 premiere of The Big Bang Theory. Young Sheldon will then move back to its regular Thursday night slot at 8:30 PM starting November 2.
