Michael Fishman Reflects on ‘The Conners’ Finale: ‘You Will Always Be Family

Actor Michael Fishman is probably best known for his portrayal of D.J. Conner, the youngest of the Conner kids, beginning in 1988 on the classic sitcom Roseanne. He reprised the role in 2018 on the Roseanne reboot, The Conners, and appeared in more than 70 episodes of the series.

After seven seasons on air, The Conners’ concluded with its April 23 series finale and Fishman took to the social media site, Threads, to thank his fans and cast mates for the journey.

“It Was an Honor”

Posting on Threads on April 23, Fishman stated, “I want to thank all of you who supported our work. It was an honor to share a set with some of the most talented people in history in front of and behind the camera. I’m thankful for every participant. We celebrate all the pieces of the puzzle, seen or not. Thank you John, Laurie, Sarah, and Lecy for finishing what we all started. I believe the legacy of both shows belongs to the fans who made it possible. To me you will all always be Conners.”

Roseanne’s Death Addressed in the Final Season

When The Conners premiered, the death of the family matriarch, Roseanne, was a springboard for the show, and it was revisited once again in the finale. In a previous interview with Us Weekly, Goranson, who played Becky Conner in the series, talked about how Roseanne references were handled in the seventh and final season. Season 7 began with the Conner family contemplating a lawsuit against Big Pharma regarding Roseanne’s death.

“It’s a really interesting thing. (The idea of) when to bring her up, how it has been through the series is when it seems right,” Goranson said. “There’s touches of it without really landing on it and making it super heavy. I think the way that Roseanne passed away on the show – and the fact that that was something that there’s a lot of in this country – that people say, ‘Hey, wait a second, it’s too easy for people to find these opioids and to get hooked on it.’ What’s important in our country is that the people have a voice,” she added.

Lecy Goranson: “I Don’t Want a Break”

Goranson also added that she would love to do a Becky-centered spinoff in the future. After originating the role on Roseanne, as the eldest Conner child, Sarah Chalke also played the character in the later seasons. But, Goranson returned to the role in The Conners.

I don’t want a break. I would love a spinoff. I imagine that might be complicated, but I would love that. I love my colleagues and the crew We have a really, really long history. When you are around people every day like that, it’s very much like family. It sounds stereotypical, but it does feel that way. I set up a happy hour meeting for the crew and we’re always saying, ‘How do we get together again? What’s our next project together?’ It’s very sincere. We all feel this way,” she said.
