Murder, Music & Mayhem: Elsbeth’s Finale Delivers a Broadway-Style Spectacle

Elsbeth is about to wrap up its second season in style with the most ambitious hour of television it has attempted yet, and we bet you’d like to learn more about it. The episode, which is packed full of guest stars, features an epic musical number — and Collider is thrilled to present an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of it all! In this week’s episode, Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) is going behind bars herself, but this time it’s to catch the killer… of another killer who’s already behind bars. Keeping up?

What’s more? There’s a veritable smorgasbord of guest stars that we’ve been treated to all season, and wouldn’t it be lovely to see them all again? Well, we can, as Elsbeth’s hard work is coming back to haunt her as she comes head to head with that rogues’ gallery that includes Retta, Gina Gershon, Elizabeth Lail, Arian Moayed, André De Shields, Alyssa Milano, Mary-Louise Parker, and Stephen Moyer as theater director Alex Modarian. And yes, they’re all going to take part in a musical number, fittingly enough from the classic musical Chicago. An official synopsis for the episode reads:

“When Elsbeth tries to solve a murder, she comes face to face with many familiar suspects, on the Season 2 finale.”

‘Elsbeth’ Is Losing a Key Cast Member Ahead of Season 3

After getting out of prison eventually, Elsbeth will have to make do without one of her colleagues, following the storyline surprise promotion of Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), who will be heading off to new pastures following the events of last Thursday night’s episode, titled “I’ve Got a Little List,” which saw Kaya’s unexpected rise as she was selected by Captain Wagner (played by Wendell Pierce) for a special task force assignment in Washington. Speaking about the development to TVLine, Preston opened up on the change of pace.

“What I love about our show is that we don’t get too comfortable in anything,” Preston said. “So we enjoy those moments together [between Elsbeth, Kaya, and Wagner] when we have them, and we will continue to enjoy them more when we get them, and we’ll probably appreciate them even more because we won’t be getting them every day. I think it’s an opportunity to really enrich the character and the storylines, to have a fresh new take on what Elsbeth is like when she doesn’t have someone like Kaya to lean on. How is she going to walk onto a crime scene without her? What’s that going to look like?”

The Elsbeth Season 2 finale will air on May 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates, and be sure to check out our exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the episode above.
