My Oxford Year may share some similarities with Emilia Clarke’s Me Before You, and this could be a warning for viewers.
The release of My Oxford Year is just around the corner, and fans could not be more hyped. Since romance fans are extremely particular about the kinds of films they like, it is quite surprising for fans to be this excited about a project. Thankfully, Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest’s casting in the film helps add a lot of attention to Julia Whelan’s book of the same name, making it one of the most anticipated romance releases of the year.
However, for those who are not convinced about the impact that this film is about to have on its viewers, one comparison will be enough to leave them wrecked. Although the film seems to be deviating from the book in certain aspects, there are some aspects that are quite similar to Emilia Clarke’s Me Before You.
My Oxford Year Is Taking Notes From Me Before You

Me Before You is a classic in every way possible. Starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke, the film is iconic in every way possible. Not only did it give us tropes like forced proximity and enemies to lovers, but it also left the viewers completely wrecked by the end, forced to watch a couple they love go through one of the worst pains possible.
Considering how iconic this is, it is not surprising that other films are taking notes from this, with the latest example being that of My Oxford Year. Both films have quite similar themes, as the upcoming film has revealed in its trailer. Both films follow a character who is in a new environment, with Louisa starting a new job and Anna coming to Oxford.

Both characters are also trying to find a sense of self and understand who they are as a person while trying to live their lives, resulting in a similar focus on personal growth. While these are focused on the character, there is a bigger overarching theme of romance that is similar in both movies.
Since Anna falls in love with her professor, both she and Louisa are set in situations where they should not love the person that they do. Be it because of forbidden or tragic romance, the common elements between the two stories can help audiences predict exactly what the upcoming film is going to be about. At the same time, there is a bigger similarity between the two movies that will leave audiences completely wrecked.
Love Turns Terminal in My Oxford Year

My Oxford Year seems to be deviating from the books, changing the main character’s name from Ella to Anna. However, the trailer shows that one storyline seems to still be present. It was hinted within the trailer that Corey Mylchreest’s Jamie seems to be hiding something from Anna.
There are also a lot of conversations about making the most out of the little time people have on the planet, and how Anna is going to spend that with him. With this, it is important to remember that in the book, Jamie had a tumor in his brain that was terminal. While he initially hid this from Anna, she eventually found out.

This is quite similar in theme to Me Before You, since Sam Claflin’s Will was quadriplegic after a motorcycle accident in the film. While both projects have very different endings, with Will choosing assisted suicide and dying at the end of Emilia Clarke’s film, it can be expected that Sofia Carson’s upcoming film will also leave us hurt in some way or another.
With this, FandomWire can only hope that the film does not leave us as broken as Clarke’s movie did.
