Nathan Lane & Matt Bomer to Lead New Sitcom Described as Gender-Swapped Golden Girls

Doom Patrol and Magic Mike star Matt Bomer will team-up with The Birdcage and Beau is Afraid star Nathan Lane for a new multi-camera comedy series from American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy and Will & Grace’s David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. Likened to a gender-swapped version of The Golden Girls, the series is titled Mid-Century Modern and is set to be released by Hulu.

Mid-Century Modern will follow Bomer, Lane, and Linda Lavin, star of the 1970s sitcom Alice, and follows a trio of best friends who have decided to spend their golden years living in Palm Springs. You can check out the official synopsis for the new Hulu series below, courtesy of Variety:

“The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper.”

The details continue, revealing that Mid-Century Modern will star Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother. Lane’s character is described as a “successful businessman with one foot in retirement, Bunny is forever in search of love, but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it.”

Nathan Lane Reflects on Coming Out, Praises Robin Williams for Protecting Him: ‘Such a Beautiful, Sensitive Soul’
The Birdcage star Nathan Lane reveals the support and protection that the late, great Robin Williams offered him.

His mother, Sybil, meanwhile, is described as being “wise, caring, and iconoclastic – which sometimes means she’s critical, smothering and amoral,” while Matt Bomer will star as Jerry who “left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was a homosexual. Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense of the term, Jerry is pure of heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head.”

The third best friend, described simply as a “naked Gen Z housekeeper” in the synopsis, has yet to be cast.

Hulu has now reportedly ordered a pilot for Mid-Century Modern, and for fans of The Golden Girls it will be easy to see why such a comparison has been made. Sources have revealed to Variety that the characters will follow a similar trend to the beloved sitcom, with Bomer playing the role of “the ditzy Rose-like character” that was portrayed by Betty White, with Lane stepping into similar shoes as Bea Arthur’s Dorothy, while Linda Lavin’s Sybil will be akin to Sophia, Dorothy’s mother in The Golden Girls.

Ryan Murphy is an executive producer on Mid-Century Modern, with James Burrows, who is best known for such iconic sitcoms as Cheers, Frasier, and Will & Grace, set to direct. 20th Television is producing the Hulu comedy series.

Matt Bomer has worked with Ryan Murphy before in both American Horror Story and The Normal Heart, and also played a recurring role in Will & Grace. Nathan Lane, meanwhile, is due to work with Murphy on another project alongside Mid-Century Modern, starring in his Netflix anthology series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
