NCIS Hawaii is the third spin-off to come from the NCIS mothership on CBS and has gone down a storm since premiering in September 2021. Set on the stunning island state, NCIS Hawaii follows Agent Jane Tennant (played by Vanessa Lachey) and her team as they investigate cases revolving around Navy and marine personnel. From time to time, the team is in need of some extra help and this is when bomb expert Norman “Boom Boom” Gates (Sharif Atkins) presents his expertise.
He observed that one of their key suspects was in possession of a “dummy” remote detonator, in an attempt to put them off the scent.
As a result, it was revealed that the real culprit was close by and was in fact Colin McIntyre (Billy Boyd), one of Captain Joe Milius’ (Enver Gjokaj) counterparts in The Group.
McIntyre was subsequently arrested and once again, Boom Boom’s assistance was proved vital.
Will Boom Boom be back for NCIS Hawaii season 2?
Boom Boom is portrayed by actor Sharif Atkins who has been in just three episodes of NCIS Hawaii season one.
Despite his infrequent appearances, fans have enjoyed watching the bomb expert continue to pop up in the police procedural.
Atkins isn’t in every episode like the main cast as he is slated as just a recurring character which Captain Joe star Gjokaj also is.
So there is no guarantee that actor Atkins will be back for more when the drama returns.
However, given the character’s popularity with fans, it does seem likely that he will make a comeback.
The fact there are no other projects listed on his IMDb page does also hint that Atkins’ schedule is free for more NCIS Hawaii filming.
If the 47-year-old actor doesn’t return for season two, this will be down to him not wishing to.
As according to executive producer Jan Nash, the show’s creators are more than happy for him to star in the upcoming episodes.
Nash told TV Insider: “Sharif is great, and we certainly hope he will return.
“Boom Boom and Chase (Seana Kofoed) and various other people have appeared, we very much hope that they will come back and appear in more episodes because they were great and they made the show even more interesting.”
Prior to NCIS Hawaii, Atkins was best known for starring in NBC’s ER as none other than Michael Gallant for five years.
He was also in Eve, Hawaii, White Collar, Queen of the South and Numb3rs
CBS renewed NCIS Hawaii for a second outing earlier this year, prior to the drama coming to an end.
The green light for more episodes was not only given to the latest spin-off but to the original NCIS for its 20th season and NCIS Los Angeles for series 14.
