As NCIS: Los Angeles prepares to bid farewell after a successful 14-year run, Daniela Ruah, who portrayed Special Agent Kensi Blye, reflects on her time with the show and her character’s journey. The finale, which marks the end of an era, is set to air on May 14, 2023. Ahead of the series conclusion, Ruah shared her thoughts on the show’s impact and her character’s evolution in a recent interview with TV Insider.
What is your favorite moment from NCIS: LA that is really representative of your character?
Daniela Ruah: Answering this is quite difficult as 14 years of experiences can’t be summed up in just one moment. Each milestone and challenge Kensi faced highlights her strength and defines who she is as a character.
Which episode or scene was the most physically and emotionally challenging for you to shoot?
One of the most challenging moments was filming the scenes where Kensi was recovering from the helicopter crash in Season 8. At that time, I was pregnant with my daughter, but Kensi was dealing with partial paralysis and undergoing intense physiotherapy and psychological trauma. It was a significant challenge but also a rewarding experience as an actor.
What did you take from set as a memento and why?
I kept Kensi’s badges, which were special to me because my children spent their early years on set. I wanted them to have something tangible to remember that part of their early lives. I also kept a photo from Hetty’s office—a picture of the Pantages Theatre on Oscar night—and a few of my favorite Kensi outfits.
Which trait from your character will you strive to keep alive in yourself, in your real life?
Kensi embodies inner strength and integrity. Her determination to fight for what’s right is something I aspire to emulate in my own life.
Are you happy with how your character’s storyline wrapped up and did you have any input into it?
I am extremely pleased with how Kensi’s story concluded. She evolved from a fiercely independent woman focused solely on her job to someone who desired a family life with Deeks while continuing to excel in her career. The writing team, led by Scott Gemmill, did a fantastic job of providing a satisfying and fitting end for her character, giving her the happiness she deserved while maintaining a sense that their lives will continue beyond the show.
