NCIS: Los Angeles is never short on action or witty dialogue. One character who brings life to the show is actor Eric Christian Olsen (Marty Deeks). He spoke about a significant accomplishment on the series back in 2012 during season 3. Here’s what he says about the big explosion on the show and how NCIS LA is different from NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans.
Eric Christian Olsen as Marty Deeks
Eric Christian Olsen has been playing Marty Deeks since 2010. Deeks is a liaison between the LAPD and NCIS who works in the Office of Special Projects. He reports to Operations Manager Hetty Large and partners with Agent Kensi Blye. Much to fans’ delight, Deeks and Kensi were married during season 10. Deeks is first introduced during season 1, episode 19 (titled “Hand-to-Hand”), in which he goes undercover as mixed martial artist Jason Wyler.
‘NCIS LA’ had the biggest non-CGI explosion in TV history according to Eric Christian Olsen
Olsen says NCIS LA has a lot more action than the other two shows in the franchise. One fun fact he mentions is the biggest television explosion took place on the series back in 2012. According to him, this explosion is special because it doesn’t use CGI.
“I think [NCIS Los Angeles] is a little higher octane,” says Olsen during an interview with The Geek Generation. “It’s like a James Bond movie every week. Gunfights, car chases, huge explosions. The biggest explosion in the history of television that was not CGI was on our show, at the end of season 3.”
Ruah says her husband, David Olsen, was the stunt person who jumped out of the building and was set on fire. Olsen goes on to say NCIS LA stands out from other shows because the series focuses on the characters. “It’s a character-driven procedural drama,” he says.” But it’s got everything you love about big action movies and relationships. It’s part of a great NCIS family, but it’s definitely contrasting in those ways.”
What’s next for Eric Christian Olsen
Olsen’s next move might include more time spent behind the camera. The actor says he would like to write more for NCIS: Los Angeles. He made his writing debut during NCIS: Los Angeles season 11, episode 10 (titled “Mother”). He co-wrote the script alongside Babar Peerzada. Olsen said he’s interested in contributing more of his writing talents to the series. Here’s what he told CarterMatt about his future plans:
If they were to say ‘yea, let’s give the kid another shot,’ I’d love to do that. It’s such a fun exercise and I know the mistakes I made the first time around and I have ideas on how to fix them. There are scenes that we lost in the episode that can be perfectly placed in another episode.
It was so life-affirming and work-affirming to have this exploration. I hope that people like you and viewers who follow the show and do deep-dives about characters and themes enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it with Babar.
