In the series finale of NCIS: Los Angeles, which aired on May 21, 2023, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill aimed to provide a hopeful conclusion for the beloved characters, while intentionally leaving one storyline unresolved.
Happy Endings for Key Characters
Gemmill focused on wrapping up character arcs in a way that felt satisfying to fans. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Anna (Bar Paly) tied the knot in an impromptu ceremony, Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) found a promising Alzheimer’s study for his father, and Kensi (Daniela Ruah) shared news of her pregnancy with Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen). “We wanted to find a way to leave everyone in a happy place,” Gemmill shared.
The Open Storyline with Hetty
Despite the closure for most characters, Hetty (Linda Hunt) remains a mystery as Sam and Callen are called to Morocco for a “side project” only to discover they need to rescue her. Gemmill explained, “It just seemed like that was a storyline we needed to resolve,” emphasizing that sending a rescue team was a fitting way to address Hetty’s predicament.
The Series’ Unique Tone
Gemmill noted that NCIS: LA stood out from other series in the franchise due to its familial atmosphere, balancing serious cases with lighthearted moments. “You knew you were gonna have an hour of escapism,” he said, reflecting on the show’s ability to provide a hopeful escape without overwhelming darkness.
A Lasting Bond
With a consistent main cast over its 14-year run, Gemmill highlighted the strong relationships formed both on and off-screen. “It’s bittersweet,” he said, expressing gratitude for the time spent with the cast and hinting at future collaborations.
As fans bid farewell to NCIS: Los Angeles, the finale left them with a sense of hope for the characters’ futures, particularly with the promise of new adventures on the horizon
