Kensi and Deeks, or Densi, as the couple is known, have been together for more than half the run of NCIS: Los Angeles. They’ve been married for a few seasons. And even before that, they’ve been joking about shared “baby mutant ninja assassins.” With most of the past season spent on the couple’s pregnancy issues, the new season looks to be the one where Densi will finally have a kid – one way or another.
When Kensi and Deeks first met, it was hard to imagine them actually working well together, much less what has come after. But thirteen seasons in – Deeks made his first appearance at the end of the first season of the show – they’ve become not just one of TV’s most solid couples, but one of the few we would actually like to see get pregnant.
The jokes started long before they got married, all the way back during Season 3, Episode 22, “Neighborhood Watch.” Back then, as Kensi and Deeks posed as an undercover couple, Deeks made a jokey suggestion to their future kids. Come season 13, it’s no longer a joke, it’s a thing they both desperately want. And a thing, it seems, won’t come easy for them.
It isn’t a new conversation, though. Though Season 12 dealt with their fertility issues head on, the two had been talking about the possibility of kids – and what it would mean considering their high stakes jobs – even before they were married. The conversation was always put off, something to consider later. In fact, the first few times they discussed this topic, Deeks seemed to be much more enthused about the idea than Kensi ways.
The show never painted Kensi as someone who didn’t want kids, however, just someone who was clearly taking her time to consider what that would mean for her – and whether she was willing to make the career sacrifices required. After the couple got married in Season 10, Episode 17, “Till Death Do Us Part,” it all turned much more real, and the conversations started becoming much more immediate. Then, in Season 11, Kensi are Deeks are finally shown to be on the same page.
But, unlike shows where the couple decides they want to get pregnant and it immediately happens, NCIS: Los Angeles has thrown an obstacle or five Densi’s way. The two have been trying for almost two seasons now, gone through fertility treatment after fertility treatment, and in the Season 13 premiere, are revealed to now be considering adoption.
Near the end of the premiere, titled “Subject 17,” Kensi and Deeks once again discuss the topic – with Kensi stating that though she loves the idea of adoption, and probably wants to do that regardless, she really wanted to have a baby with Deeks. He agrees and points out all that had to happen to get them to where they are, together, saying that, perhaps, they just have to “trust the universe.”
“What if the universe doesn’t want us to have a baby?” Kensi asks, to which, of course, Deeks makes a joke, to distract her – and us. Except three seasons into a storyline that the show has planted seeds to since season 3, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case. Whether it be by adoption, or them actually getting pregnant, season 13 might just be the time we get payoff for this storyline. How that will affect the show, however, remains to be seen.
To find out if Kensi and Deeks will end up having a baby, NCIS: Los Angeles air on Sundays on CBS
