NCIS: Tony & Ziva Episode 3’s DiNozzo Twist Highlights Major Story Issue

Warning! Spoilers ahead for NCIS: Tony & Ziva Episodes 1-3.

NCIS: Tony & Ziva drops a major bombshell about Michael Weatherly’s character that exposes a major issue in his romance with his star-crossed lover. The NCIS franchise expands once again with its latest spinoff officially debuting. Marking the on-screen reunion project for Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, NCIS: Tony & Ziva is a departure from the universe’s procedural formula.

Instead, it’s a more character-driven series that focuses on the couple’s new life in Paris years after they have both left MCRT. Interestingly, however, Tony and Ziva are not together when the Paramount+ spinoff starts. Despite this, there’s a promise that NCIS: Tony & Ziva‘s story will finally deliver a satisfying payoff to years of the pair’s push-and-pull.

While it’s still too early in NCIS: Tony & Ziva‘s run, episode 3, “Cover Story,” drops a major bombshell about DiNozzo that changes the way the show is perceived. The revelation highlights a major pain point in the couple’s dynamic.

In the middle of the couple’s ongoing crisis, NCIS: Tony & Ziva episode 3 reveals that Tony has a girlfriend — Nicole. While he’s had several relationships, before, during, and after Ziva’s time with MCRT, this one feels different, primarily because he’s serious enough about it that he wants to introduce her to Tali.

Unfortunately, the twist doesn’t end there. NCIS: Tony & Ziva also reveals that Nicole is also married, introducing yet another complication in an already complicated love triangle. Interestingly, Ziva boldly declares that there’s no chance that they’ll get back together again in the present time in NCIS: Tony & Ziva episode 1.

The flashback sequences in the spinoff offer a glimpse of what exactly went wrong for them after Ziva’s return, although there are still narrative gaps. This opens up new questions about how they ended up in this situation after their hard-fought reunion in Paris.

Tony’s Girlfriend Reveals That He Wants To Truly Move On (But Can He?)

Michael Weatherly in NCIS: Tony & Ziva

Regardless of what happens with Nicole, Tony actively dating and even maintaining a serious relationship signifies that he wants to truly move on from Ziva. Considering how he held onto her even after she was presumed dead, it would be an understatement to say that deciding to finally be done with her was extremely difficult for him.

During Tony & Ziva’s time in NCIS, he was always the one chasing after her. Now, it seems like he’s accepted the idea that there’s no future for them — a painful realization, especially since it’s obvious that they still clearly love each other.

It’s safe to say that ultimately, NCIS: Tony & Ziva will end with the pair reconciling. For what it’s worth, episode 3 is already showing signs of a rekindled romance. However, if it isn’t going to be a long-term committed relationship, perhaps it really is time to accept that they’re just not meant to be.
