Netflix Introduced the Perfect Yellowstone Replacement (With a Romance Twist) That Is Already a Huge Hit

Taylor Sheridan has been expanding the contemporary Western genre with his Yellowstone universe, but the genre is getting more additions. Netflix has just joined the game with a new contemporary Western romance, Ransom Canyon.

The show debuted on Netflix on Apr. 17, and it has already become a hit, per Tudum. Starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, Ransom Canyon comes from April Blair (Wednesday, All American), and is based on Jodi Thomas’ book series of the same name, which she published between 2015 and 2017.

Following its premiere on Apr. 17, Ransom Canyon didn’t take long to enter the charts. For the week between Apr. 14 and 20, Ransom Canyon debuted in second place after Black Mirror: Season 7, which topped the charts in its second week since its release.

Ransom Canyon attracted 7.2 million views and 56.6 million hours viewed for its 10 episodes. The Western romance entered the Top 10 in 59 countries, and became the No. 1 show in two of them: the U.S. and South Africa.

Ransom Canyon takes place in Texas Hill Country, and follows three ranching family dynasties who are fighting to control the land. Despite its popularity in the charts, Ransom Canyon hasn’t been a huge hit with the critics. Season 1 has an unfortunate “rotten” score of 50% from 14 reviews, but a more positive 74% from the audience.

Will There Be a Ransom Canyon Season 2?

Considering the show has just premiered, Netflix has yet to greenlight a second season for the Western romance. However, considering its cliffhanger ending, Ransom Canyon left fans wanting more. As fans are waiting to see what happens, Netflix and the creators have yet to announce any plans for Season 2. However, its chances look promising.

Showrunner and Ransom Canyon creator April Blair teased to TVLine that they already know what would happen in Season 2, and that they are confident about the show’s future. “We’ve already started the writers’ room, even though the show hasn’t been picked up to series yet for Season 2, but we were already grappling with that, and what we wanted to do was kind of put to bed that loss, in a way,” Blair noted about the shocking ending at the end. “We wanted to find some closure with that, and also, who was behind it and what really happened opens up a whole new series of relationship drama between Lucas and Lauren, as you know. So it gives us a lot of runway in other stories as well.”

She also addressed how Margaret’s actions impacted the Brigmans and the Russells. “In a potential Season 2, I think it’s a huge part of what’s going on. We’re still just in the room, so I don’t have every aspect to tell you. Westerns are morality tales, and so every aspect of this show, we always try to come from that foundation of love, lands, and legacy, and what that really means.”

She also highlighted that, if Ransom Canyon Season 2 happens, that will come with a time jump of at least six months. “We would need to because I don’t want to do anything in New York. So the idea right now, although nothing’s set in stone, is that we would do at least a six-month time jump.”

Ransom Cayon is streaming on Netflix.
