New ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff ‘Boston Blue’ Only Has One Returning Character (So Far)

Headed for a fall 2025 CBS premiere, the cast for Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, is beginning to take shape. While most fans are aware that Donnie Wahlberg will continue his role as Danny Reagan, the shift from New York to Massachusetts will inevitably introduce a new ensemble of actors to play fresh roles. With a few returning names as well, Boston Blue promises to be a smooth transition from one popular police procedural to another.

While the casting for Boston Blue is subject to expansion in the coming months, so far, it appears that Blue Bloods‘ Tom Selleck will not reprise his role as Frank Reagan in Boston Blue. However, he did not rule out the possibility. As fans await confirmation of Tom Selleck’s involvement, one way or the other, it’s time to become familiar with who Danny Reagan (Wahlberg) will meet in Boston Blue when the spinoff airs this fall.

As mentioned, Donnie Wahlberg will continue to play the role of Danny Reagan in Boston Blue. Wahlberg began the role in the long-running cop show Blue Bloods in 2010, portraying the character for 14 seasons and 293 episodes. Danny Reagan is a dedicated New York detective whose father, Frank Regan, is the New York City Police Commissioner. Not only is Danny’s father in the police force, but so are most of his family members, drawing a thin line between his home and work family.

In Boston Blue, Danny Reagan accepts a position in the Boston Police Department (BPD). Upon arrival, Danny joins new partners in the BPD, who he learns also have long-term law enforcement ties. No longer in the advantageous position he was in during his New York reign, where who you know is just as vital as what you know, Danny must find his footing and adapt to his new city and departmental surroundings.

Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead, Star Trek: Discovery) will play Lena Silver in Boston Blue. Lena is Danny’s newly assigned partner in the BPD, whose impressive early track record suggests she is a “rising star” (via Variety). Just as Danny did in New York, Lena is the eldest child in a family with several law enforcement contacts in the city and the community, which gives her an advantage over the unfamiliar Danny.

In addition to having a grandfather who works in the Boston clergy, Lena Silver has two sisters in Boston who hold high legal and municipal positions and a little brother who works on patrol. As Danny gets to know his new partner, he will inevitably meet Lena’s grandfather, sisters, and brother. It’s worth noting that CBS’ initial casting announcement stated the character’s name as Lena Peters, not Lena Silver.

Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver

Maggie Lawson (Psych, Lethal Weapon) will portray Sarah Silver in Boston Blue. Sarah is the younger step-sister of Lena, who works as a Superintendent in Boston. Deadline describes Sarah Silver as someone who is “Well aware of the tightrope she can walk sometimes between her job and her family.” Also labeled “strong-willed” and “decisive,” Danny is sure to rub elbows with Sarah as he gets more familiar with his police routine in Boston.

Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver

Fresh off the Deadline presses is the casting news that Gloria Reuben (ER, Mr. Robot) will play Mae Silver in Boston Blue. Mae is the daughter of Reverend Peters and Boston’s District Attorney, giving her immense legal power and influence in the city. In addition to her grandfather’s religious ties, Mae is the mother of Lena, Sarah, and Jonah Silver.

Deadline describes Mae Silver as “The widow of a judge who was murdered on the courthouse steps, Mae endeavors to put family ahead of work whenever possible.” Similar to the surname Peters being changed to Silver for most characters, the youngest child in the family, Isaac, has been changed to Jonah. Jonah will serve as a rookie police officer with the Boston Police Department.

Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters

Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, Grace and Frankie) will play a new character named Reverend Peters in Boston Blue. Reverend Peters is a well-respected pastor in a storied Baptist Church in Boston, where he serves as a major force in the religious community. Reverend Peters is also the patriarch of a mixed family and is the father of Mae Silver and the grandfather of Lena, Sarah, and Jonah Silver.

Deadline describes Reverend Peters as “An open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions, he is happy to preside at his church’s traditional Sunday Baptist service.” Interestingly, Hudson appeared as Principal Daryll Ward in a 2018 Blue Bloods episode and will now play a different character in Boston Blue.

Other Potential Returning Characters

As of now, Danny Reagan is the only Blue Bloods character set to return to Boston Blue. Tom Selleck, who played NYC Police Commissioner and Danny’s father, Frank Reagan, is not expected to appear in the spinoff. However, Selleck did say that he was “open to suggestions because I love Frank Reagan,” but couldn’t envision seeing the character moving to a smaller precinct.

Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl regarding Marisa Ramirez’s return as Detective Maria Baez. Danny and Maria formed a potential romance at the end of Blue Bloods, prompting many to believe Maria would follow Danny to Boston and begin life anew with him in the spinoff. Although Ramirez is not confirmed to appear in Boston Blue, Maria may end up seeing Danny again at some point.

In addition to filling the role of Jonah Silver, more casting tidbits about Boston Blue are sure to come out as Season 1 nears production. The show is expected to premiere on CBS sometime in the fall of 2025.
