Nicola Coughlan said a unique clause in her Bridgerton contract ensures her parents get to watch a family-friendly version of the steamy show.
The Galway-born actress, who plays Lady Penelope Featherington in the Netflix show, says the producers have agreed to send a PG-rated cut to her family in Ireland.
Nicola, 37, said: “It’s literally written into my contract. People think I’m saying it as a joke.”
Speaking on SiriusXM Hits 1 she said: “I just don’t want to. I grew up Irish Catholic. That’s just not how we vibe.”
The Irish actress recounted her mother’s initial reaction to Bridgerton’s racy scenes, admitting: “When she first saw Bridgerton, she didn’t know it was gonna be so saucy.
“And then you get a bottom, Jonathan Bailey’s lovely bottom, about two minutes into the first episode ever.
“And she was like, ‘What is this? ‘ But then, now she thinks it’s fantastic and really funny, and she keeps talking about bottoms.”
Appearing in Channel 4’s Big Mood, Nicola acknowledged that not all content can be censored for her parents’ viewing.
She revealed: “There’s a saucy scene in Big Mood, not Bridgerton level, but it’s in there. And I had avoided showing her that. And I did a talk show in Ireland in which she was in the audience, and they showed it on that.”
“And I was like, ‘Okay, well I can’t control that anymore’.”
Nicola’s character, Lady Penelope, is expected to find love in the third season of the popular Netflix drama, which will be released on May 16 (part 1) and June 13 (part 2), reports the Irish Mirror.
“We did break a piece of furniture while doing one of those scenes,” she said.
